the previos post about the chicken nuggets cooked by a goy, is there any way to mattir them, got me thinking.

so i would like to ask all the lomdei halacha in the CR. if a goy cooked something that would be assur because of bishul akum, and then he himself converted, would he be able to eat that food? my thought process is that since the issur of bishul akum is due to the problem of getting too comfortable with the goy [and eating in his house… marrying his daughter… eating treif food (see rashi and rishonim on the sugya in avoda zara)], that would seem not to be applicable if the goy who cooked the food was himself. what do you think?

Assur. Bishul Aku”m applies even in specific circumstances where there’s no chashash, for example, a childless non-Jew.

    Cute, though.

DY: Not so Pashut. The food was never Assur to him. And since the reason is Chasnus, it doesn’t make sense to Asser it post-facto. See the Poskim who say that a Mumar can eat his own food and drink his own wine. It’s a Machlokes Achronim, but according to that Tzad I could see his own food being Muttar for him to eat.

The food is bishul aku”m. The fact that it was not previously assur to him is irrelevant; neither was chazir.

The din of mumar is based on knas. We’re talking about an actual goy.

DY: Come to think of it, Stam Yeinam of a Ger has to be a Shaila that the Poskim talk about. I’ll do some searching and see if I can find a Makor. The Din should be the same in both situations.

Rabbi Ahron Soloveichik z’tz’l paskened that the laws of stam yeinam did not apply to persons in the process of conversion, as they have already renounced idolatry by declaring their intention to become Jews. I once say one of his talmidim open a bottle of non-mevushal wine, hand it to a goy who was in the process of converting, and instruct the goy to pour it into his kiddush cup. The talmid then made kiddush on the wine and gave it to everyone at the table!

Does that mean he held the same of Muslims?

I’ve heard the same psak from Rav Ahron also said by Dayan Grossnass, and le ma’aseh, Rabbi Marc Angel and Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo hold this way, as well.

I’ve also heard the same apply to Reform and Conservative converts on the grounds that they are obviously not idol-worshippers, even if they are not fully observant.

This psak sounds curious. Does it apply to a ger toshav? Is that discussed in the halacha? (my otzar hachochma was running too slow last night, and now I’m too busy to look it up)
