I’m in ninth grade in a Bais Yaakov where a lot of the Hebrew classes are incredibly boring. (English too, but that’s not important…) Me and my friend both go crazy after 10 minutes; we need stimulation. She takes out Sudoku; I feel isn’t right to do during, say, a chumash class, that it’s totally not respectful to the Torah. I would switch to another higher level, faster class, but this is the (sadly) the honors class…. The teachers are sensitive type and I don’t think there’s a way for me to tell them, “Can you please go faster / be more interesting /” etc.? Is there anything I could do during the class that wouldn’t be disrespectful to the torah (or the teacher)?
Write notes. If that isn’t enough, write some comments regarding the subject.
Welcome to High School not every subject will you find interesting and entertaining doing things you do not like is a part of life a part you get used to the older you get, if you feel like its not challenging enough for you than you should speak to your parents and then the principal.
In 11th grade English, our teacher had “commercial breaks” where he would hand out some cute/obscure fact or activity. Sudoku sounds like a good idea.
Make paper airplanes, throw spitballs, pass notes, text message.
If the teacher isn’t trying enough to make it interesting, why should you try?
I second popas point and might add that the human was created with a neshama that is naturally attuned to torah, If it doesn’t resonate with you, feel free to ignore the bore and find something else to do, be it sleeping (my personal favorite) or drawing doodles or open up a sefer you find interesting and easy.
I am finding it amusing that you say “English too, but that’s not important”. Is this just your outlook on the English subjects or is it the typical Bais Yaakov outlook?
I went to a Bais Yaakov my entire life but I guess you can say it wasn’t the most “typical” Bais Yaakov. I do know that English was very important in my school. Taking the sat’s was important, going to college was important (they did push Touro though). I just find it amusing that people really think that the English subjects are nothing and are a waste of time.
Bekitzur- don’t worry. I’m not saying that is the way you think of it, I’m just generalizing that many do think English classes are pointless.
Just make sure not to waste your teenage years.
happiest, I understand what you are saying, and it is probably true that many people do feel that way. I just think that when bekitzur said “English too, but that’s not important”, it could be she meant that she is mostly feeling bad about being bored for Limudei Kodesh subjects since she feels it may be disrespect to the Torah, as she said later. And not necessarily that she thinks general studies are not important, but rather that she felt it was a more pressing issue by Limudei Kodesh. Just another way of looking at it.
Surf the web. Or the CR, depending on which BY you’re in.
Or you could become a HS kallah, and then you’ll have a whole lotta things to keep you busy during class!

Do what others have done in your situation:
speak to the teacher in advance regarding your dilemma and if the teacher can prepare in advance extra stimulating work for you…
even if you begin with other meforshim followed by Nechama Leibovitz or categorizing different topics or comparing similar root words with different meanings or even working with a girl struggling with the subject…or the teacher can create her own workbook for you…
just remember to thank Hashem for the gift and not let others feel bad

bekitzur- I totally hear that. I’m sorry for saying what I said. I misunderstood your words. I should have asked you to verify or to explain what you meant by what you said, before saying what I did.

The question is- do YOU agree with popa? Does what he says make sense? does it resonate with your intellect?
You say you are “just wondering”. The inference of that statement is that the answer will not affect your opinion. If that is correct, that means that you already have an opinion. MY question is what is YOUR opinion?
We want to know what you think, (ready for this?) not what you think other people think you should think.
Bekitzur, if you’re so bored during class, then ask your teacher if you can do something otherwise and make up the notes later. It’s not worth it to just sit in class and do nothing. Do something with your time!

bekitzur, i understand that you are very bored in class, but maybe this is just HaShem testing you to see if you could fight the boredom and really focus on what the teacher is saying. Torah is very deep, you are never done learning.
you could also just respectfully speak to your teachers about this issue. Im sure they will be happy that you spoke to them and will help you. if you find more girls who feal the same way maybe you can speak to your principle and make make an even higher level class.
if you feal that the teacher is very easy or going to slow, you can always look in the Chumash, navi, etc… for different meforshim (in english and/or hebrew) on what you are learning because Torah is very deep and there is so much to learn!
also ask questions and make apropriate comments on what you are learning in class.
These should make Limudei Kodesh classes more interesting.
