Does anyone know why borsalino split from hatbox? And are borsalino hats really better then hatbox or is it all about the brand?
If you didn’t know what label is under the hat, virtually no one in the street could tell the difference between one black fedora and another.
Borsalinos look better than other black fedoras. Are they $200 better? I don’t know.
The truth about hats: hats are made of a natural material – fur- so it is very hard for a company to mass produce and keep quality the same year over year. Some years, one brand may find a good fur provider and other years a different brand will have found the best provider. Therefore, brands do not matter. Instead, first you need to ask, is this beaver fur? rabbit fur? Beaver is usually better than rabbit but not all furs are the same. Feel it with your hand. Run along the felt and test its snap and thickness. I have seen gorgeous borsalinos and ugly ones. Gorgeous Roches and uglies. Same for every brand.

the beaver brand is (ironically) usually made of low quality rabbit. borsalino has a beaver line as do many others. i believe every roche is a blend of mostly beaver + some rabbit and they also do a pure beaver.
if you respect Jewish tradition, you should wear the same hats as Tannaim and Amoraim did.
the only people who have a good reason to wear black hats are Sephardim. They do it in order to behave like people around them.
Neither brand has a hashgacha from PETA.
If you truly wish to be mehader mitzvah, go for a faux chinchilla streimlach so no one will mistake you for some clueless Litvish wanabee.AAQ: The reason Sephardim wear black fedora hats is because the Ashkenazim set it as the default dress of Bnei Torah.
ujm: exactly, Sephardim are not wearing turbans as their Gedolim did for centuries, how dare they? They simply dress like people around them to fit. I have no problem with that.
