I grew up not eating gebrokts, and switched after getting married (after consulting with my Rav). When I first had matzah brei, I assumed the brachah on it was hamotzi, because the pieces of matzah in it are still clearly visible as matzah.
I was by my brother in law for the first days, and he told me that he was told to make a mezonos on it, since it’s fried. I did some searching online, and saw a few places that say hamotzi, but the OU site says mezonos (unless the pieces of matzah are bigger than a kezayis, which they usually aren’t.)
Why would this be a mezonos? If it’s still recognizable as matzah, shouldn’t it stay as hamotzi?
March 29, 2013 3:24 pm at 3:24 pm #941728SaysMeMemberit’s debatable. Depends how much oil is used and how big the pieces of matza are and….
One way to make it mezonos is to ‘cook’ the matza before making it into brei, ie putting the pieces into boiling water.

March 29, 2013 6:48 pm at 6:48 pm #941730yeshivaguy45ParticipantSam2-When you boil bread (or in this case matza), it loses the shem hamotzi and turns into mezonos.

March 29, 2013 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #941733popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe way I make it, I am certain it is mezonos maaseh kedeirah, and thus is mezonos no matter how many seudos you are koveah.
Recipe:
Take about 1 and a quarter hand matzos, and smoosh up in a pot.
Run hot water from your sink until very hot, then fill up the pot with it to cover the matzo.
Put on stove on high for about 15 seconds.
Drain the water and smoosh it all out of the matza. (You may need to run cold water in to cool it down so you can smoosh.
Add two eggs, kosher salt, and pepper, and mix mix mix.
Heat a cast iron skillet with several tablespoons of oil.
Dump the mush in, and spread out. Cook on medium low.
After a few minutes, pick up the piece with a wide spatula, and turn off the flame. Standing back, flip it over into the pan, splattering oil all over yourself.
Turn flame back on and cook on medium for a few more minutes.
Eat. Don’t put any cream cheese on. Throw the cream cheese at your sister in law (who by now is usually throwing dirty diapers at you because of various things you have been telling your nephew.)
March 29, 2013 8:33 pm at 8:33 pm #941734ChaimyParticipantAs it was said if you see the matza even small pieces than Hamotzie. If you can’t recognize it anymore because it was soaked for half an hour and there are NO pieces than it changes the Bracha.
March 29, 2013 8:57 pm at 8:57 pm #941735DaMosheParticipantChaimy: hat’s what I thought. But here’s what the OU website says: Mezonot – Provided that none of the pieces of matza is as large as a keza-yit (i.e., about one-third of a matza). If even one piece is that large, then Hamotzi is required.
I’ll ask my Rav tonight what he thinks about it.
March 29, 2013 9:03 pm at 9:03 pm #941736yeshivaguy45ParticipantSam2- shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim Kuf samech ches seif yud. You can also look at the brachos sefarim, they bring it down (Vezos Habracha, R’ Forst’s sefer,R’ Bodner’s etc)
March 29, 2013 9:03 pm at 9:03 pm #941737popa_bar_abbaParticipantChaimy: That is not the halacha. It does not matter if you can recognize pieces. It matters if you satisfy what the halacha says.
March 29, 2013 9:52 pm at 9:52 pm #941738rebdonielMemberI will eat a piece of matzah and wash on it prior to eating matzah brei, to avoid sfeikot.
March 30, 2013 5:38 pm at 5:38 pm #941739ItcheSrulikMemberIf you eat matza brei you are clearly a sheigetz and shouldn’t be making brachos anyway.
