Ok. Let me get serious for a change. (Why would I want to do that?) I was eating soup Shabbos Night on my porch and upon VERY CLOSE inspection noticed little bugs, gnats, in my plate. How is it possible to avoid them, they’re SO tiny. How did they eat in the olden times with so little lighting. I think there’s a Gemarah or other source that says one is committing five or six aveiros for ONE!!
July 9, 2012 4:16 am at 4:16 am #884086OneOfManyParticipantThat’s probably because every bug on the block was swarming around your porch light. If it wasn’t on the porch and at night, I don’t think you would have this problem…

July 9, 2012 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #884091BaalHaboozeParticipanti heard there were not as many bugs as there is today.
In the days of old, though, this problem DID exist to a certain extent and is brought down in many seforim (ex: Chasam Sofer), where certain cities/countries avoided eating certain fruits because of bugs.
But SOUP?? This is a new one…

July 11, 2012 1:07 am at 1:07 am #884093Song of BlessingParticipantk FIRST of all – eating outdoors will bring bugs regardless of the day n age! (Specially at night!)
and 2nd of all I’m 100% sure they had some natural bug repellant in those days to keep the bugs out of their homes. I mean they didn’t live out in the open they did live in some sort of houses lol. Think about you’re succa’s they dont get soooo many bugs. A little yes but not a crazy amount…
