I was thinking of re-locating to Canada- to either Toronto or Montreal.
Did anyone hear good reports about these cities?

January 13, 2011 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #728833mikehall12382MemberMontreal is great. There are plenty of great communities that will fit your lifestyle (MO, Yeshivish, Chassidish) you name it. As a whole the entire Jewish population is considered to be very traditional. Montreal also has a rather large Sephardic population…There is also very good schools (that are affordable) restaurants and bakeries. Not to mention tons of family friendly activities….here is a great reference http://www.mk.ca/

January 13, 2011 9:43 pm at 9:43 pm #728839Derech HaMelechMemberBefore moving to Canada, I just want to bring your attention to a gemarah in Yoma 10a:
…and Parsai- How do you know that [they] come from Yefes? AS it is written “[the] children of Yefes: Gomer and Magog and Madai and Yavan and Tuval and Meshech and Tiras”. Gomer is Germanya. Magog is Canadia. Madai is Macedonia…
Who would have thought that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police may just be the army that will wage war on us?
January 13, 2011 9:53 pm at 9:53 pm #728840charliehallParticipantDerech HaMelech,
Magog is not Canada as the country did not exist at the time of the gemara.
January 13, 2011 9:55 pm at 9:55 pm #728841charliehallParticipantBoth Toronto and Montreal are great cities.
Montreal has the unusual advantages of (1) low costs of housing, (2) significant government support for Jewish religious schools, (3) an excellent government mandated secular curriculum that all religious schools must follow, and (4) lots and lots of snow!

I GOOGLED ????? THE WAY ITS SPELLED IN YOMA AND IT CAME UP MANY SEFORIM DISCUSSING THAT GEMARA AND IT SEEMS THAT ????? IS A ISLAND IN THE MIDETERANIAN SEA.
January 14, 2011 12:38 am at 12:38 am #728846charliehallParticipantdeiyezooger,
Candia is the old name for Heraklion, the largest and capital city of Crete, the Greek Island. The word also has been used to refer to the entire Island. The English derivative “Candy” referring to the location appears in Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”. I think we have solved our mystery.
January 14, 2011 1:33 am at 1:33 am #728847HealthParticipantThere was a time in Quebec politics that the frum yidden were considering leaving. It was very scary for Jews. There was a lot of fear of anti-semitism. I think it had to do with the separatist movement. This was either in the 70’s or 80’s not hundreds of years ago.
eclipse -Was the same thing going on in Toronto?

Toronto would never do a thing like that!:)
Actually, many years ago when I was visiting Toronto,I was literally in the middle of telling someone how much more courteous Toronto was than New York…when a (Torontonian) goy from a tall apartment building dropped a hard bagel on my head.
And people think G-d doesn’t have a sense of humor!

January 16, 2011 1:35 am at 1:35 am #728855demoMemberif you are moving from new york or even another big city in the states toronto will be a hard adjustment for you. i dont know about thornhill but the frum area of bathurst from wilson to eglington is not the most friendly place on earth.the cliques are hard to crack.the weather is horrible and the shopping pathetic.food staples that are kosher in the states are not kosher in canada.many groceries are not even available in canada.the garbage is only picked once every 2 weeks and you are only allowed 6 bags.the healthcare is poor and good luck finding a doctor/pediatrician who will allow you to join his patient list.tuition is quite expensive and there is no bussing unless you send the kids by public tranportation or hire a private company.school lunches are not included in tuition neither are books or supplies.all the good stuff other people will tell you im sure-life isnt as hectic, the kids behave better, the streets are cleaner, etc.if you need a shidduch be prepared to travel.if you need to travel be prepared for for the taxes on you airline ticket to be the same amount as your ticket.taxes in toronto on food, clothes, manicures…EVERYTHING is 13%.
January 16, 2011 2:12 am at 2:12 am #728856eclipseMemberdemo when were you in Toronto?Sounds like you had a really bad experience.
January 16, 2011 3:46 pm at 3:46 pm #728857HealthParticipantdemo- Sounds from your description, Montreal is better than Toronto. Never had a problem getting any food there (Montreal). A lot of people go to Plattsburgh on a Sun. for cheaper shopping. I always heard that “Toronoh” -you had to be wealthy to live there. I’m not a Canadien; just was a “frequent flier”.
January 16, 2011 7:15 pm at 7:15 pm #728858charliehallParticipantThe province of Ontario pays for Catholic schools but not Jewish schools.
However, the provinces of Quebec and British Columbia pay about half the cost of Jewish schools. (Basically, they cover the cost of the government-mandated secular curriculum.) I visited British Columbia twice this past summer and was very impressed by the small community in Vancouver. It has a Chofetz Chaim yeshiva with some very impressive rabbis. The community in Victoria was tiny but very friendly. In other respects they are expensive cities but the major cost of Jewish living is the schools. And the weather is mild and the natural surroundings are beautiful.
