Depends. How much do they need it? How much can you afford it?

When they start to drive they should have a phone. If they go to a school far away or something of that sort and the phone is really necessary than they should get one whatever their age.

i agree with onegoal. but for the second situation (because the child may be young,) set certain terms/rules. actually its prob not a bad idea for any teenager who justs wants one but really doesn’t NEED it.

yummy- The point about terms/rules is a good one. Depending on the age the terms/rules will vary. If I had a second grader in a school an hour away I would give him a phone but tell him/her that the phone is to remain in his/her bag and only taken out in case of emergency.

i look at the kids in my community and I am trying to fathom why they have cell phones! some kids got them at age 10 and others at 12 or 13. I mean come on what is this world coming to that they all have to have cell phones. I went to pick up a kid in a school, in junior high and they had bins for the 6th 7th and 8th grades to drop their phones off in the bins. 6th grade! what is this? why do they need a cell phone??? if your child is mature and old enough to handle the responsibilities it comes with than gzunte heit(however you spell) but if not then dont even think about it. kids today are so spoiled and they need to be up to par with everyone else and it’s just not normal. Sorry I had to get that off my chest!

to yogibooboo, sometimes kids have to travel on citibuses or trains to get to schools from 6th grade on. i am much more comfortable knowing that my child can reach me or someone else if necessary. When I spoke to the principal of a yeshivish type Flatbush yeshiva he agreed with me that it was okay if the phone had no internet or texting and would remain out of sight during yeshiva hours.

common sense-the kids im talking about all go to local schools adn they are def texting left and right. the principals here are NOT happy that their students have cell phones.

Kookalibeer-i have a great idea. why dont you write in to the chinuch roundtable and ask the panelists there
