Recently, a Chabad house opened up in Biloxi, Mississippi, making Mississippi the 49th state to have a Chabad house. The only state without a Chabad (or any Orthodox shul) remaining is South Dakota. There have been Chabad rabbis traveling to South Dakota in the summer as part of their “Roving Rabbis” program, but as of yet no full-time Chabad house. Does anyone know if there are plans for a Chabad house in South Dakota, or how I could find out?

If their missing an area it is likely due to not having a willing candidate as they strive to cover as many geographic locations as possible. If you volunteer to be the shliach I’m sure they’ll give you serious consideration.
August 21, 2014 1:17 am at 1:17 am #1030020jewishfeminist02MemberWe would, but we’re not affiliated with Chabad and my husband does not have semicha. We were actually considering opening a kiruv center independently and wanted to make sure Chabad doesn’t beat us there, so to speak.

August 21, 2014 2:31 am at 2:31 am #1030022squeakParticipantIf there’s no Chabad House you can bet it’s for a good reason, and here’s one possibility. The nearest neighbor to the House would be at least 500 miles away. Because it’s South Dakota. And the only time 10 people are gathered in any proximity is on election day.
Seriously, get your ice water and get out. Or better yet, fly over 🙂
August 21, 2014 2:52 am at 2:52 am #1030023ravchaimglechbergMemberFunny u bring that up I was just speaking to someone at Chabad who was telling me about Chabads plan to send someone there in the near future. It sounded like they had a huge plan for the last state

August 22, 2014 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm #1030027popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t get it. Suppose there is a chabad and you also open a kiruv center. What is wrong with that?
Torah is not a competition. More is always better. If you are teaching torah and someone else also is, that is just more torah.
The people who like your teaching better will come to you and the people who like their teaching better will come to them.
August 24, 2014 6:14 am at 6:14 am #1030028jewishfeminist02MemberOf course it’s not a competition. But there are only a few hundred Jews in the entire state of South Dakota. It would not make sense to have two kiruv centers, especially if they were located near each other. We think Sioux Falls makes the most sense, since it is the largest city and has a university an hour away. Pierre, which is the capital, is a tiny city. If Chabad is planning to open a house in Rapid City (home to Mount Rushmore) on the other side of the state about 8 hours away, that would be one thing. But if Chabad is going to Sioux Falls, there is really no reason for us to be there.

August 27, 2014 3:52 pm at 3:52 pm #1030032popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t think I agree.
That assumes that the functions of two kiruv operations would be redundant. But the same way that the people who walk in today are not redundant of the people who walk in next year, the people who walk into one are not redundant of the people who will walk into the other.
There are plenty of communities with more than one kiruv operation, and it is always good.
August 27, 2014 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #1030033☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI agree with popa, although there might be financial considerations.
August 27, 2014 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #1030034popa_bar_abbaParticipantDY: Any operation of this sort would definitely rely on outside funding anyway.
Besides, you think Hashem doesn’t have enough money in his wallet to support both?

Cute.
August 27, 2014 5:26 pm at 5:26 pm #1030036☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI don’t disagree with you from a hashkafic point of view, but it does take a certain level of emunah to undertake something which is difficult al pi teva.
