Does anyone know of a reason NOT to give Chanukah presents to family memebers (children)?

I ask because it has become our family custom, but everyone ends up buying each other’s kids cheap shmatteh toys (for say $4 each) because no-one wants to spend too much. Then there’s the unfairness of the parents with 2 kids buying 7 presents for the parents with 7 kids and vice versa.

To me it smells like Chukas Hagoy. For years I thought it strange/wrong. If only I had a source ‘assering’ it I would be able to wriggle out of this unfortunate family custom.

Note I am not questioning Chanukah Gelt – I’m questioning Chanukah presents.

    Please help!

And please – no lectures about how I should be more giving.

I was always taught that the source for chanukah gifts come from a fat man with a long beard in a red suit.

In my family we got small gifts from our parents nights 1 through 7 and a larger present on night number 8.

We got Chanukah gelt from our parents and relatives and after Chanukah my parents would take us to buy what we wanted with our money.
