I am interested in going to Chedvas next year. I have the following questions:
1. What is the hashkafa? I know it is bais yaakov, but I have heard that it is a bit different than pninim. Do they require you to get a Kosher Phone? I use a laptop for assistive technology, I am willing to get a filter on it, would that be ok?
2. What is the uniform like?
3. Do they offer scholarships?
4. What are the girls like? Are they New- Yorky?
5. What is the tuition?
6. Do they cater to people with a weaker background in Limudei Kodesh (I went to a bais yaakov school last year, but since I only went for one year, my skills are significantly weaker)?
7. Are they able to cater to people with minor learning differences (I need extended time, preferential seating is a MUST because I have a very short attention span and it gets even shorter if I am not in front- row- center- center, and I will need to be able to get copies of other girls notes because I have weaker note taking abilities)?
Any answers to these questions would be much appreciated.
January 30, 2013 2:09 am at 2:09 am #1142069nannyMemberAll I know about Chedvas is that its shana bet for American girls, however they might also have quite a number of Israeli girls going there for shana alef. I’m in twelth grade now and I have a friend my age who is planning on going to Chedvas next year (they are one of the only sems who allow girls living in Israel for some reason). My friend told me they don’t have tests or homework (I could check that with her again if you want)and they are mostly a BY crowd- more so that Pninim.
Thats all I know- hope it helps… 🙂

January 30, 2013 12:17 pm at 12:17 pm #1142071snowbunny3318MemberI just called the school and they said that they are not sure yet if next year they will be having the following:
Pninim Shana Bet- No Chedvas.
Pninim Shana Bet- Chedvas Separate school.
No Pninim shana Bet- Chedvas (meaning the same as this year)
They told me to call again in a month because they do not usually start the application process until after Pesach.

I know that there is a girl there this year who takes college classes at michlala during the day,and classes at chedvas at night. How often does that occur, because I am most likely going to get a job as a bat sherut because that is the only way at this time to support myself financially for next year while still figuring out what I want to do with my life (due to a really tough year, I have not really had time to think much about that this year), and I want to be able to take night classes because I am only going to get seven creditsish from this year, and I cannot afford to enroll in a university in Israel while being a bat sherut without making aliyah due to messing up my aliyah benefits in case I do…
Basically, its just complicated.
February 14, 2013 1:19 pm at 1:19 pm #1142074fiddlesticks88MemberJust FYI, aliyah benefits don’t start from when you make aliyah. Your benefits start from when you step foot in Israel and start spending an extended amount of time in Israel. There are a certain amounts of months you are allowed to be in Israel during a certain time frame (for example, 18 months out of a total 3 years-these are NOT the correct numbers, you need to look this up on your own, I don’t remember what it is exactly). If you go over this time frame, you’ve lost a lot (not all) of your rights. You need to look into this before you decide to not make aliyah because of benefits being lost. You may end up shooting yourself in the foot. I know several people that have lost out on rights because of this logic. You don’t necessarily lose all benefits, but you’ll lose ones like a lift, etc. You get left with buying a few Israel made appliances, and a few other benefits.
February 14, 2013 3:01 pm at 3:01 pm #1142075snowbunny3318MemberI am planning for shalom bayis reasons to make aliyah in october- or something like that. Like after the chagim. In the meantime, I got my mothers blessing to do night classes for shana bet in order to be able to get my oorah scholarship, so I am most likely going to camp again this summer on discover u…

February 20, 2013 12:25 am at 12:25 am #1142080reader55MemberHi Snowbunny, I almost went to Chedvas for shanah bet, but for personal reasons I had to stay in America in the end. Rabbi Kahane, who’s the principle, is AMAZING! Chedvas has all the best teachers from all the different seminaries. There’s a big break in the afternoon for people who do college or work. They will help you find a job if you want to make some money while your there.
Here are some of the answers to your questions:
1) The hashkafah is totally different from Peninim. The only thing that Peninim and Chedvas share is the building, and also that the Meisels run both of them
2)I’m not positive, but I think the dresscode is similar to other seminaries, button down shirt and pleated skirt.
3&5) The tuition is around 14,000 for the whole yr, 7,000 for half. Rabbi Kahane is very understanding, and sometimes gives people the whole yr for the half yr price. This was the case for me, and when I told him I wasn’t coming, he offered to lower it even more, in case the reason was the money
4,6,7) I’m not really sure the answer to these questions, because I didn’t end up going, but I know Rabbi Kahane, and he’s really understanding of everyone’s need.
Good Luck with your decision!

February 20, 2013 6:00 am at 6:00 am #1142082snowbunny3318MemberDo they require you to get a kosher phone? I need to know so that i am prepared to pay for what ever phone i need to get for the school, I would prefer to use orange next year as my carrier because talk and save is very expensive.
March 13, 2013 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm #1142083snowbunny3318MemberFor those of you who are wondering, they require you to get a kosher phone, but they are really accommodating, I was told that I am allowed to bring my computer there for classes, I also found out today that there is a chance that Chedvas would be able to work out an agreement with Touro in Israel, so that you can get financial aid to go there either through fafsa or through the Israeli government…
There are so many things going on at the moment that it is a bit insane…
March 13, 2013 11:09 pm at 11:09 pm #1142084Smile E. FaceMembersnowbunny-not to put a damper on things, but i thought you can’t go to touro israel if you’re making aliyah. is that not the case?
(also, i debated whether or not to say this, but i think i’m going to, and i do apologize if it hurts you in any way.i’m just putting this out there, and you can do with it what you like.
i don’t know who you are, nor am i interested in finding out. it’s not my business. but there are yentas in this world who think that everything is their business. and based on information that you wrote, people are trying to figure out who you are. meaning, they made an assumption that you went to my school, and i’ve been asked to identify certain things. i’m a year ahead of you, so if you did go to my school, which idk if you did or did not, i don’t know you. i also did not try to find out, b/c like i siad, that’s not my business. i’ve told people who asked that it’s not their business as well… i don’t know how private you want to be, but i would like to warn you that people get all excited when they “figure someone out” and it’s almost an exciting thing for them. again, i’m not trying to be hurtful.i just want you to be aware of certain unfortunate realities in this world… )
hatzlacha rabba with everythign! i hope it all works out for you! 😀
