This Shabbos is the anniversary of the massacre of the jews which took place at Cliffords Tower in York, 1190. It is said that as a result of this incident, a cheirem was placed on York forbidding people to sleep there overnight. Can anyone provide a source for this cheirem?
March 23, 2015 4:11 pm at 4:11 pm #1066037sirvoddmortMemberNo. Because as far as I am aware, there has never been a cheirem officially put on York. And this makes sense, seeing how if York was in cheirem, so would London, Paris, Warsaw, Vilna, Chevron or basically anywhere where they had a pogrom.
Of course, it is entirely possible that somebody will find a source, in which case I defer to actual evidence, as opposed to hearsay.
March 23, 2015 5:51 pm at 5:51 pm #1066038newsreaderParticipantas far as i know rabeinu gershon put a cheirem on york. i am not 100% sure. anyway after a certain amount of years the chierem goes off.
March 23, 2015 6:08 pm at 6:08 pm #1066039sirvoddmortMemberI assume you are referring to Rabbeinu Gershom Me’or Hagolah, who lived around 150 years before the CLifford’s Tower massacre.
March 23, 2015 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm #1066040zahavasdadParticipantIts not even clear that there was a Cherem on Spain. There certainly isnt one for Germany
March 23, 2015 6:16 pm at 6:16 pm #1066041Little FroggieParticipantI’ve heard of it too. Can’t recall who. Maybe it was the ‘Rabbonim’ of that era, who cursed that soil upon which our blood was soaked upon, that it should henceforth not benefit from the presence a Yid brings.
March 23, 2015 6:57 pm at 6:57 pm #1066042popa_bar_abbaParticipantI am actually machmir that this includes New York

March 23, 2015 8:45 pm at 8:45 pm #1066044ChortkovParticipantWas this where the Baalei Tosfos wrote Tos’ Baba Kama 77? Or was that a different massacre?
March 23, 2015 8:45 pm at 8:45 pm #1066045Sam2ParticipantSomeone once told me that the Cherem is mentioned in the Pinkes of the Vaad Arba Aratzos but that doesn’t make so much sense either. Have never seen a Makor inside yet.
March 23, 2015 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm #1066046sirvoddmortMemberYekke2:
Yes. Although do you know where this story comes from?
March 23, 2015 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #1066047ChortkovParticipantEr… York?
March 23, 2015 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #1066048sirvoddmortMemberLol. But you know what I meant.
March 23, 2015 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #1066049Sam2ParticipantIsn’t the Bava Kama 77 story in Seder HaDoros or Doros HaRishonim or one of those Seforim?
March 23, 2015 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm #1066050sirvoddmortMemberThat’s what I want to know.
