I was going to ask this on the vaccine thread but decided it needed its own thread.
Have there been conspiracy theories that turned out to be true?
Can you name any of them?
And please dont use circular reasoning to claim a particular theory is in fact truth because you believe in it. “Turned out to be true” means that a conspiracy theory that was once on the fringes, has now become broadly accepted as fact.May 26, 2016 5:22 am at 5:22 am #1153916JosephParticipant

Theories are only till they are proven. Were there conspiracies between various people and agencies for certain gain? Yes, obviously. They only remained a secret until they were exposed and proven in public.
Powers and greed are the two main reasons shady deals are crafted. As long as the human species exist there will be all sorts of conspiracies.May 27, 2016 3:52 am at 3:52 am #1153918adocsParticipant

There probably is one somewhere (depending on how far you’re willing to stretch the term “conspiracy theory). But the overwhelming majority of them indeed ended up being wrong. This is not surprising, seeing as most conspiracy theories are made up based solely on an over-active imagination and the unshakable assumption that any and all professionals are always lying, with little regard for things like facts, statistics, logic, and common sense.May 27, 2016 4:57 am at 4:57 am #1153921charliehallParticipant

Not sure how Obama’s birthplace is a conspiracy theory. There is a theory out there that Obama was actually raised by outer-space aliens and then sent to Earth to completely ruin it. On his very last day of being president, he will command the military to drop nuclear bombs on every large city on this planet.
So far, no one has been able to disprove this theory, and there seems to be lots of *very* strong evidence to support it. It’s not that I completely believe this, but also don’t want to take chances and will avoid large cities on his last day in office. “He says clearly -“It’s true – I’m not from the United States – I was born in Kenya!””
Um no. You need to listen a few more times that is not what he says. There clearly are pauses eg “I come from (pause) Kenya” It could also easily be cut if he had said “wackos like Health think I come from Kenya and planted seeds in Hawaiian apers at my birth knowing I would one day run for president which even if I was born in Kenya since I am a natural born citizen as my mother was a citizen under the constitution I would be eligible anyway.”
“I’m not interested how the DemonCrats fooled so many Americans!”
Why arent you interested in the truth?
Here is a snippet from the above piece:
“If you listen closely, you can hear bad editing. The volume and sound quality of his voice change at key points, such as between “it’s true I’m not” and “an American.” The video never shows his lips where he makes his key admissions, so you can’t see if his lips are in sync with what he’s saying. And his audience offers no reaction to what should be a stunning admission.
So where did that portion of the video come from? The logo at the bottom of the video reads obamasnippets.com, which takes you to a YouTube humor channel that features seven videos in which Obama’s words have been edited for laughs.”

Yes, some conspiracy theories have been proven true.
For example, long unsubstantiated claims of government surveillance of private citizen electronic communications were later confirmed with the release then-secret NSA information by the Edward Snowden in 2013.
Prior to this, the Wikileaks organization, reportedly headed by Julian Assange, publicized the then-secret reports of international espionage back in 2006.
I suppose one could go further back to the release of the “Pentagon Papers” by Daniel Ellsberg in the 1971 having to do with the US fighting in Vietnam.
Depending on how one defines a conspiracy theory or what it takes to turn that into fact, there are probably a large number of them, though not nearly as many as there are bogus theories.
In the end, it’s hard to know what is true and what is false just by reading about a controversy. Most of the time, it pays to reserve judgement for a while to allow “the noise” to subside and the facts to come to light.May 29, 2016 2:21 pm at 2:21 pm #1153948

“Whether Obama having been born outside the U.S. would have invalidated his U.S. citizenship at birth is debated. Political commentator Andrew Malcolm, of the Los Angeles Times, wrote that Obama would still be eligible for the presidency, regardless of where he was born, because his mother was an American citizen, saying that Obama’s mother “could have been on Mars when wee Barry emerged and he’d still be American.” A contrary view is promoted by UCLA Law Professor Eugene Volokh, who has said that in the hypothetical scenario that Obama was born outside the U.S., he would not be a natural-born citizen, since the then-applicable law would have required Obama’s mother to have been in the U.S. at least “five years after the age of 14″, but Ann Dunham was three months shy of her 19th birthday when Obama was born”May 30, 2016 3:10 am at 3:10 am #1153964
Donald Trump cloned his brain as a newborn and Hillary Rodham was the clone. Later he figured out how to fully clone himself. That’s where John Miller comes from.
