“BTW think before you put us down”… “BTW, I know your wrong” Syrian, why do you think Ames was putting you down?? My husband is of Syrian origin and I did not feel she was putting “us” down. I grew up in the community and I can guarantee you 95% do not all go to Deal. And tons of Sephardic girls do go to sleep away camp. So far, many posters have said that they even knew of some SY girls who did go. The way the community has grown more religous, B’H, Fortunately, the only camps these girls can go to are Ashkenaz sleepway camps. There they get to meet other religous Ashkenaz girls. We are all Jews and I think it is wonderful that they get to meet and befriend other jewish girls. Well, need to get some ZZ’s. Have a good night.

Syrian, the reality is that your 95% is impossible!! I can guarantee you it is not possible. First of all the entire community is not all able to afford the rents and the price of the day camps. With rentals for homes starting in the $10,000 for the whole summer and not to mention that day camps in Deal are even more costlier than in Broolyn, coupled with fact of commuting back and forth for Husbands to Manhattan/NYC to the Jersey shore and even taking the train is expensive as well!! With Tutions costing so much. It is impossible for all the Sephardim to be in Deal. Are you in Brooklyn in the summer?? There are quite a few day camps that cater exclusively to the Sephardic community with tons of kids who remain in Brooklyn, not to mention the Askenaz day camps as well. I know because I send my Kids to Ashkenaz Day camps and the sephardic kids most of the time have their own bunks. BYA, Mesores, Chaim Berlin Ruach, Ohr Shraga… just to name a few. Also, alot of the frum sephardim go away to the country. Actually, in one of the schools it is MANDATORY for the High School boys to attend sleepaway camp. Also, there are even a few sephardim who even are in Monsey for the summer. I can’t believe that you as a syrian, are sterotyping yourself. Most of my friends are in Brooklyn.

Joseph, it was one of the first things I heard on the boat over, not counting the sounds of tefillin going overboard.

squeak – And you tell me that I have a long memory?

syrian – its ridiculous that 95% of Syrians spend the summer in Syria? Why? Is it more like over 99%?

    #633912

First of all, I’m not looking to argue, we can go on and on about this. 2nd, I’m SURE ur friends are most of the ashkenaz type. 3rd- half of ur facts were wrong but OK I don’t care!!

Ames, trying to explain to Syrian that Brooklyn(parts where the Sephardice community members reside) is not deserted. Mod’s are not putting up alot of my posts. Just trying to find out from Syrian how is is financally feasible for 95% of the community to be in Deal for the Summer and want to know if I can get on the Gravy Train. Since “95%” of my community is in Deal and I really miss them. 😉 ALOT!!! I want to go to Deal too :(.

Syrian- sorry to break it to you, but MOST of my friends are Syrian Sephardic. My kids attend Sephardic Schools and I identify myself with the syrian sephardic community. Please don’t go on making assumptions about other people. Just because I may not look or dress like the typical “SY”,or have the means to able to go to Deal, for the summer, doesn’t me make less of a Sephardic person than you are. I cook the same foods as your mom does, albeit incorporating some ashkenaz foods on Shabbat (gefilte fish or kugel anyone??) I daven/pray/sully Nusach Aydot Ha Mizrach. I don’t understand how you can presume most of friends are Ashkenaz. Is it because I don’t go to Deal for the Summer?? Does that make my friends Ashkenaz?? Yes, I have few ashkenaz friends, actually, my best friend is ashkenaz, but most of my friends include people from my husband’s Sephardic shul, parents from my children’s sephardic school, friends who attended the same sephardic schools growing up, and my family. Didn’t you read in some of my threads that my father was from a middle eastern country, though my mother is ashkenaz, she learned to speak Arabic and that is what my parents spoke to each (especially when they didn’t want me or my siblings to understand). I managed to be able to understand Arabic, but I don’t think I’ll be able to be as fluent in the language as my parents are. My mother ONLY makes middle eastern foods, that your own mother makes. I am sorry but I think, you as young person, you have alot to learn about people,

The Frum Syrian community must be quite large as the 5% NOT in Deal for the summer constitute quite a lot of people in Brooklyn and the Catskills.

Generally though, I agree with the earlier post that stated “it is a safe bet that 95% of Syrians spend their summer somewhere in Syria”.

Syrian- I would be more than happy to give you a grand tour of brooklyn in the summer time. I’ll show you where the people are. Let’s take a walk past the SCC. Why do my eyes deceive me, are there actual sephardic campers??!! then lets head over to Mikdesh melech Matamidim wow do I hear sounds of boys learning in the morning?? I wonder what the overnights are schedulued for??? As we continue we pass Shaarim Day camp/a division of Shaare Torah. Let’s go to the boys day camp first. Wonders of wonder there are actual sephardim in the camp full to capacity B’H. Wait we still have to get to the girls division. We will also be stopping by the various ashkenaz day camps that have so graciously accommadated our syrian sephardic children. Syrian, please take off your rose colored sunglasses!! I am sure everyone in YOUR ciricles are in Deal all summer, but my friends run in the range of the Fabulously wealthy to those who need unfortunately need fininancel aassistance. Yes, the ones that can afford, do go to Deal. But most of my friends are in Brooklyn. I can assure you that there are more have nots, than the haves. And with your 95%, you are assuming, that 95% of the syrian jewish community have the means to be able to afford the summer in Deal.

I know this is a bit late..but I was wondering if anyone had anything to say about the bais yaakov convention that was held in Toronto in the end of November.

Anyone’s daughter went to it? Anyone who lives in toronto’s daughter involved in it??

recent conversation: Deal NJ and the syrian community. way off topic.
