I’ve heard that R Moshe says cotton is better than poly cotton

Are we discussing three year olds?

It’s for sure ok to wear cotton, but if you wanna be more machmir then wear wool. What I do and i know a lot of people do is wear cotton or mesh during the week and then wear wool on shabbos.

There’s a big machlokes about which garment materials are chayav deoraysoh in tzitzis. Everyone agrees cotton is chayav at least derabonon, but the gaon holds that it is deoraysoh, even though we have a klal of tzemer and pishton being the Torahs definition of ‘beged’.

The mishnah berurah says one should bring themselves into a chiyuv deoraysoh when possible, and recommends wearing wool.

Yerushalmis who follow the gaon wear cotton, and in bnei brak the chazon ish held it was a chumra de’asa lidei kula to davla wear wool, because since it’s very hot, the wearing of thicker wool garments might not be considered “malbush”, and so he wore cotton and so did rav chaim kanievsky.

Synthetic fibers are a shailoh if they’re chayav at all, i.ee mesh. It’s best to avoid mesh tzitzis altogether, unless they are made of cotton. Making a bracha is pushing it.

Undershirt tzitzis are complicated. 4 cornered garments have to be mostly open on 4 sides, so if you sew up the sides to make sleeves, the majority underneath needs to be open.

Zilzul is another issue, because the undershirt will be very sweaty, especially by its main clientele – teenagers who play ball and run around the whole day.

Some permit this, but it’s not for bnei torah.

the Ramban quotes the Maharam saying that one shouldnt wear tzitzis today because it requires tcheiles. In which case cotton or poly is better. using today’s tcheiles isn’t better in this regard because its unlikely the right type & tying pattern.

@sensibleyid: we dont pasken like rebbi that tchelis is me’acev.

The askenazi rishonim pasken like Rava that all minim are d’raysa, but the Sphardi rishonim pasken like R Nachman and Tana Dbei R Yshmael that only Wool and Linen are D’oraysa.
    (FYI, the Gaon wore Linen – not cotton, big difference! because his other undergarments were linen and he didnt want shaatnez – but linen is also d’oraysa for sure;
but Rabenu Tam held wearing linen is Assur mdrabanan because might wear tchelis (wool) on it on a nighttime garment – which wont be doche the lav of shaatnez)

Sens; theres a shitah of the baal hamaor that it is hotzaah on shabbos, but i never heard of a shitah that says that we don’t wear them at all – source?

Yabia – it’s a machlokes. The gaon held it’s deoraysoh.

the gemara menachos basically says you need techeiles (unless the garment is ripped)
Menachot 39b implies that a silk garment doesn’t need techeiles because its only derabanan
the ramban said ‘R’ Zerachiah HaLevi did not wear any tzitzit his whole life’
Meor is on the rif 11b shabbos (rif daf)

Sense, we pasken that techeles is not meakeves es halavan; the baal hamaor is a good source, but he does not say that he does not wear tzitzis, only that he doesn’t on shabbos if there’s no eruv.

Where’s the ramban’s statement about the baal hamaor?

In my recollection, the Meor says not on Shabbos because of carrying. And the Ramban argues than always, because of 4 corners without tzitzis.

    “Requires techeiles”

Total mix-up. The discussion is about if the white tzitzis on linen garments is wool or linen.

    “The right type”

What does this mean, kalla illan?

    “Tying pattern”

From this same Meor and Ramban, it is clear that holes etc. are not the issue.
