Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s top aide privately apologized to Democratic lawmakers for withholding the state’s nursing home death toll from COVID-19 — telling them “we froze” out of fear that the true numbers would “be used against us” by federal prosecutors, The Post has learned.
The stunning admission of a coverup was made by secretary to the governor Melissa DeRosa during a video conference call with state Democratic leaders in which she said the Cuomo administration had rebuffed a legislative request for the tally in August because “right around the same time, [then-President Donald Trump] turns this into a giant political football,” according to an audio recording of the two-hour-plus meeting

Although at the time it seemed like a reasonable approach
hospitals had a bed shortage , instead of “storing” stable Covid + nursing home residents in hospitals, and having nurses change PPE between tending to them and Covid neg patientswhy not send them back to their homes and have nurses change PPE between tending to them and Covid neg residents.

so own up to it , hiding and coverups are completely inexcusable
The coverup is inexcusable and wasn’t even necessary. Nursing home death rates were higher in NY than many states but lower than many others. (As of a few weeks ago, NY was #18 out of 50 states plus DC.) At least Cuomo is getting called out for his doctoring of the numbers; Ron De Santis is getting away with it.
Cuomo should plan on retiring in 2022.

It probably prevented tens of thousands of deaths from ambulances needing to be turned away at hospitals. But the lack of PPE (not Cuomo’s fault) and the generally poor care given in many nursing homes literally killed people. And a coverup is inexcusable. I wonder how many other states many have doctored their data; we know Florida did.

Cuomo is a genocidal maniac. He should be put in the dock and tried for genocide. Just seeing him in an orange jumpsuit and in chains will do a tiny level of justice to the tens of thousands of Cuomo’s victims who are no longer alive.

Of course it was necessary, he was directly responsible by placing COVID patients into nursing homes.

Ghadora: So far Cuomo acknowledged 15,000 victims died in New York nursing homes. And that count excludes victims that died after being transferred from the nursing home to a hospital. That’ll likely more than double the count, as must of Cuomo’s victims died in a hospital.
So, yes, tens of thousands is an accurate description of the number of Cuomo’s victims. And this count isn’t even including Cuomo’s victims who weren’t in nursing homes but died due to Cuomo’s gross mismanagement of the pandemic. New York and New Jersey have the two highest death ratio from covid-19 of all US states.

Cuomo failed to change his murderous nursing home policy immediately after those extra hospital beds became available (thanks to the Trump Administration.)
I would like to offer a new perspective:
maybe to prevent chaos, and for the good of our nation cuomo held back the numbers….

Why does this bother you but not Trump setting national policy when he told the country that the virus was a hoax, that it would magically go away, that it would be gone by Easter, that it can be cured with an untested drug, and G-d knows what else? Why does this bother you more than Trump appointing Kushner hiring a bunch of college kids to supply the nation with PPE, specifically excluding NY because the voters are majority Democrats, and requiring states to bid for limited supplies? Why does this bother you more than DeSantis, Kemp, Abbott, and the other ghoulish governors opening their economies in April 2020 so the virus could spread most easily in those states killing hundreds of thousands of Americans?

Not for nursing homes. MA is #1. Partly because Jared Kushner’s goons stole 3 million PPE items. HIs obstruction of PPE deliveries is probably the real reason nursing home deaths were so high, but chas v’shalom anyone connected to Trump ever get blamed for anything here.

Yes Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order that arguably caused thousands deaths.
Yes he admitted that the true extent of it was covered up.
No Liberals do not.Until this issue is resolved, CNN should take his brother Chris off the air. While its not guilt by association, the two were inseparable on Chris’ night coverage of the Covid issue multiple times last spring and summer when all this was happening. I think having Crhis now opine on the Biden Covid policies and accomplishments will raise credibility issues for the networks other reporters and commentators.

How would this issue be resolved? I thought it is already resolved – someone admitted that they were covering deaths to avoid federal prosecutors. I am not aware of a “Trump exemption” in federal policies.
Charliehall where is the evidence that Ron desantis played with the death toll that’s a big accusation? As opposed to cuomo where it’s been actually proven he lied about them?

New York State accounted for nearly half the US COVID deaths during April 2020. Why isn’t Cuomo held accountable for that?

Oh, I thought the issue was fully confirmed.
Some facts:
1. Cuomo required nursing homes to take back patients
2. Cuomo forbade nursing homes from testing the patients for Covid or refusing to accept them.
3. The nursing homes were not prepared to deal with Covid
4. Cuomo’s Dept of Health supervises the readiness of nursing homes. Of 600 nursing homes, 100 are rated one star ( out of 5 ) only because you can’t be rated no stars
5. The Javits Center and the Navy hospital ship were available April 7
