What does it mean to cut off a car while driving? If you change lanes, are you cutting off the car that you are now ahead of in your new lane?

cutting off a car, (in a negative way) is usually when the person that got cut off is upest now that he got cut off. Either because you almost caused an accident, or he is no longer in the lead.

If someone merges into your lane abruptly and too close to you for comfort, you just got cut off.

cutting off a car means jumping into his/her lane without signaling or without having enough space to do so, causing them to brake and scaring them half to death. Which usually starts road rage and has them ready to switch lanes and start the cat and mouse chase.

There’s another name for cutting off another car. It’s called “attempted suicide” (or “homicide”). Cutting in front of another car isn’t just impolite, it’s extremely dangerous and can get you, the other driver, or someone else in the same area killed or permanently disabled.

Careful driving is polite driving so as the saying goes, you’ll “arrive alive.”

Careful driving… better to lose a minute of your life than your life in a minute!

Better to lose a quarter in a liquor store, than to lose a quarter of your store of liquor.

Cutting is usually without signalling, passing too closely by in the process, thus preventing you from doing what you were about to do. It can result in an accident, and ALWAYS results in the one getting cut off getting varying degrees of road rage.

L’kaf zchus, it IS possible to cut someone off and be unaware that you did so. But only once in a while. If you are cutting someone off inan obvious way, or they, you, it was deliberate, thoughtless, and provocative.

Cedarhurst: Take some driving lessons. Some things cannot be learned simply be reading words on a page, or even words on a screen. Agittayid gave a good answer, but if you have to ask, you need practical, real-world, behind-the-wheel instruction.

So how do you change lanes if no one in the lane you are trying to get into allows you to enter (i.e. they move closer to the car in front of them to leave no space)? The only way often is to force your way into a tight break, effectively “cutting off” the car.

If you see a line of cars patiently waiting in the right lane (change right to left if you are in Great Britain) to get onto an exit ramp and you go on the left lane and suddenly pull right in front of the line so you wouldn’t have to wait like everyone else, please, please first hide your peyos and take off your kapl BECAUSE IT’S AN AWFUL CHILLUL HASHEM.

It is also probably gezel and gneiva – ask any posek.

HolyMoe: To prevent the above, I usually stick out taking up both lanes, to prevent others from cutting in. I generally hear loud protests (honking) but whether they learn their lesson or not, they don’t get ahead of me.

Yochie – it is very wrong to take up two lanes, and it can cause an accident c’v.

Gabboim, you’re right. Sometimes you have to squeeze in.

I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. (But neither while driving)

Also, it is legal to go into the right exit lane at any point until the white line becomes solid.

by the way, if you get cut off, the smartest thing to do is say to yourself….ok, obviously this driver is in a hurry , maybe someone is sick or such. and let him ride away.

the worst thing to do is cut him off.

Cedarhurst, I refering to the area like the entrance or exit of the Brooklyn bridge, way past the double solid white line. I don’t actually take two lane, just enough for any normal drive to have to think twice before cutting ahead.

If you live in the area, you’ll realize the only alternative is to wait in line for about a half hour for a distance of a couple of feet!

today there are tons more people on the highway constantly cutting people off-even when the person in front is going very fast-cause today we are now living in a very impatient generation where noone has even a second to spare. even if it will put your life at risk C”V. VERY SAD BUT ITS THE TRUTH

this is where all the rushing & beeping comes from in brooklyn IMPATIENCE

Mashiach Agent – brooklyn is VERY bad driving. its EXTREMELY dangerous. people should ONLY go in front of others if they speed up (if theirs enough room for them) and speed up VERY fast to be far ahead of the car ahead of them otherwise its TOO dangerous.

don’t feel bad brooklyn is not the only crazy driving place-as i see every time i visit there-but Lakewood has also recently become crazy driving & very dangerous & it comes straight from the brooklyn crowd moving to Lakewood when i go visit Lakewood often enough. from the beeping to the driving etc…

I looked back but did not see him..I looked front and saw 2 cars coming… that split secound I ran into the road hands spread apart cutting off the cars for a full stop…..I looked back there was my son 5 feet away from the car I stopped…thank you Hashem for saving my child…

absan – i dont want to offend anyone its right before yom kippur. but parents who allow their child to run into the streets cannot be that responsible.

Absan _ I hope you realize that you were negligent in not watching your child properly, your 2 year old shouldn’t be allowed to go into someones driveway. Unless the neighbor has a backup camera on his car they are not going see the child if they backed up their car, so it’s just a question which car was likely to hit him. I hope in the future you take better care of tyour children and not rely on Hashem to watch over them, otherwise social service will take them away. You are lucky none of the drivers reported that you let your 2 year run in the street.
