soliek i have this mishegass…its kind of a game i play. any time i see a dangling participle i try to find an alternative. for example, this one i learned from winston churchill: Not ending a sentence with a preposition is a bit of arrant pedantry up with which I will not put.
now i might be a bit pedantic myself…i do hope i have not incurred the ire of the late prime minister by playing this game of mine 😛
how about allayall? (thats southern for all of you) you have such mishegassen?
im stuck on one actually “i will not be taken advantage of” see even if you rearrange the sentence, that clause will still have a dangling preposition. now you COULD sat “i will not be exploited” but wheres the fun in that eh? 😛
DANGLING PARTICIPLES:
now THESE are fun! rephrasing them is easy because its usually obvious where the mistake is and what should be done about it, but there are some really funny ones 😀
Walking home, a tree branch poked me in my rib.
so apparently a tree branch was out for a stroll…and decided to poke that poor fellow in his rib 😀
GO!

Guest: Excuse me, do you know which wing the ceremony is being held at?
Harvard Student: At Harvard we do not end a sentence with a preposition.
Guest: Ok, do you know which wing the ceremony is being held at, jackass?

July 8, 2011 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #784007sof davarMemberAdvantage will not be taken of me.
I am someone of whom advantage will not be taken.

July 8, 2011 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #784014sof davarMember“so, any grammar that you guys are stuck on ?”
I believe you meant to say “So, any grammar on which you guys are stuck?” 🙂
July 10, 2011 1:53 am at 1:53 am #784015bombmaniacParticipanttouche 😛
ok heres another challenge…”I feel so taken advantage of!”
without using synonyms…rephrase correctly.
July 10, 2011 3:28 am at 3:28 am #784016sof davarMemberI feel that advantage has been taken of me.
I feel that I am one of whom advantage has been taken.
The first one flows better but the second one keeps the “I” (subject) form as opposed to “me” (object) form.
July 10, 2011 7:35 am at 7:35 am #784017on the ballParticipantLook, if we are getting pedantic, ‘I feel so taken advantage of’ is not just a problem of a dangling preposition.
It is grammatically incorrect anyway.
Firstly the word ‘so’ cannot be applied to a verb in that way despite it’s popular use amongst teenage girls.
Even without the word ‘so’ – it should read I feel I HAVE been taken advantage of.
Also, bombmaniac, for someone who consistently misspells the most common word in the English language…….;-)

July 10, 2011 1:45 pm at 1:45 pm #784019Derech HaMelechMemberWill someone please tell me what an example of a dangling preposition would be considered like?
July 10, 2011 3:07 pm at 3:07 pm #784020chocandpatienceMemberDerech HaMelech: I suspect, like, you know perfectly well, like.
If you don’t, a dangling preposition is one that has taken a false step on a cliff path.
