What’s this phenomenon I see on my way to shul in the morning with men running (sometimes literally) to shul while reciting Birchos Hashachar, Shema, Karbonos, etc. in the street. It’s usually the same people.
Are you not able to get up in time (just a few minutes earlier) to put on Talis and Tefillin in shul and daven there with the proper Kavannah? I’m sure you know the issur of davening with improperly dressed folks in view. Can anyone can help me be “dan l’kaf zechus?” To me it saeems like an open disregard for Hilchos Tefillah.

Can try, FG, no guarantees.
I can almost guarantee, though, that these same individuals are generally not punctual in other area of their lives.
We know that they can actually do it, as we see when they need to daven before the amud and it is necessary for them to be on time.
There is help for these people if they WANT to change, from learning about the psychology behind chronic tardiness (interesting stuff!) as well as practical behavioral changes.
Oh, yes, at least they are makpid on davening with a minyan.
And on putting on tfillin.

September 19, 2011 12:40 pm at 12:40 pm #811010m in IsraelMemberThere’s a famous “Berdichever” story. Once the Berdichever Rebbe saw some frum wagon drivers greasing the wheels of their wagons as they finished up Shachris. The Berdichever said “Look at the greatness of Klal Yisroel — even while greasing their wagon wheels they are davening!”
Seriously, everyone has their own nisayonos, and for some waking up on time is very difficult. It is their avodah, and quite frankly none of your business. Can you say in honesty that there are not areas of Halacha that are hard for you? When people speak Loshon Hara, is that always “an open disregard for the halachos of shmiras halashon”? I would venture to say that for most frum Jews it is an issue of overcoming a particular yetzer hara, not disregarding Halacha.

The Berdichiver story was the first thing to pop in my head when I began reading this thread!!
Git Gezugt!
September 19, 2011 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm #811012Mayan_DvashParticipantHere’s a good case: I travel far for my job. I wake up early and daven close to my office (near Yehupitzville, Long Island). Sometimes there may be traffic along the way, which means I’ll have to start before entering shul.
Another possibility: He davens nusach Sefard and is going to an Ashkenaz minyan, so he’s saying the additional tefillos that Ashkenaz does not say, whether in korbanos or the beginning of P’sukei D’zimra.

Hashem, look at Your people who are dan lchaf zchus in so many ways; please judge your people just as favorably on the Yomim Noraim AKY”R.
September 19, 2011 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm #811014miritchkaMemberI saw a woman pushing a carriage with one hand, a siddur in the other, dressed in excersize clothing (was tznius), and brisk walking. Oh, did i forget to mention that she was davening too?
I always try to be dan lekaf zechus, but this just irked me. How could someone daven, while brisk walking, pushing a carriage, keeping an eye on your baby, watching the street lights and traffic all at the same time? I find it very admirable that although women are very busy they try very hard to daven when they can, but there’s a reason why woman dont have a chiyuv to daven! If you feel that you really want to daven with a siddur, do it properly. if you cant, daven the way a woman can – a tefillah here and there.
September 19, 2011 7:26 pm at 7:26 pm #811015apushatayidParticipant“a tefillah here and there.”
That is exactly what she is doing. Brachos on this block. Korbanos on the next. Ashrei on yet another block.
Please try not to be so negative when looking at people. I know we are not all on the magreiga of the Berditchiver, but less than 2 weeks away from the Yom Hadin it cant hurt to try. We all know that we want the Ribbono Shel Olam to view our actions the same way.
September 19, 2011 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #811016BaalHaboozeParticipantCouple days ago this guy is running like the wind down the street, as if being chased by a ghost or something, red in the face, tzitzis flying, whizzes by me, and I hear him say “Ribboinoi Shel Oilom…pleeease….I’ll say Asher Yotzar with such Kavonna….
Sometimes davening in street is forced upon us. LOL.

apushatayid: i hear ya’. However, the ‘here and there’ tefillos i was referring to are the tefillos that many women say throughout the day; please Hashem let my children have a good day today! Thank you for making the weather so nice today, please help me make time to get outdoors! Please make my supper come out good, i made it so my family can have stregnth to do your mitzvos…etc..
I wasnt knocking that she was davening in the street, i daven in the street all the time (a her and there tefillah) What irked me was that she was holding a siddur. Isnt there a halacha that says we cannot daven outside because its distracting? Saying shema while watching your kids in the park, doesnt that sound a bit odd? How can one concentrate on the meaning of the words with all the responsibilities she has?
September 20, 2011 2:58 pm at 2:58 pm #811018Sam2ParticipantIf she has so many responsibilities then you should admire her ability to find any time to Daven at all.
September 20, 2011 4:43 pm at 4:43 pm #811019apushatayidParticipantPerhaps she doesnt know everything she wants to say by heart, so she has a siddur. Even when she is busy, she is trying to find time to daven. I find that laudable.
September 20, 2011 4:52 pm at 4:52 pm #811020Feif UnParticipantI try to always be on time to davening. However, on Shabbos morning, although I’m ready, sometimes I can’t leave to shul yet. I have small children, and I need to take care of them until my wife is ready to take over. Only then can I go to shul. If I realize I’m running late, I will sometimes daven pesukei d’zimrah during my walk so that I can say shemoneh esrei together with the tzibur.
