I recently saw an ad for a new development for “chassidsh/heimish” families. While I think I know what “chassidish” is, and I think I know what “yeshivish” is, I can’t put my finger on “heimish”.

    How do you define “heimish”?

Heimish is the term used to describe people that take upon themselves different Chassidish Minhagim but are not affiliated with any specific chassidus.

Chassidish means the full garb, shtreimel and bekeshe included and is a devoted follower of one specific Rebbe.

Heimish is more like jacket and gartel (double breasted suit preferred)or with one or more of the following options: Bekeshe with down hat; jacket with up hat; beard; trimmed beard; no beard; usually with chassidishe havarah; is a follower of one or more Rebbes but more passively than a full fledged chossid…….That’s a start

Fellas- am I on the mark?

You don’t. Everyone has their own version of ‘heimish’. For some people it’s an excuse to infringe on other people’s privacy by saying “but it’s heimish”

Cholent is heimish, farfel is heimish, chicken soup is heimish… I think sushi is also heimish nowadays. That should be quite the development.

“Heimish” means similar to the way MY ancestors are/were.

To many, the word heimish is secret code for “comfortably well off.” Especially when consulting regarding shidduchim.
