It looks like for now Biden keeps Trump’s sanctions on Cuba in place despite the left wing pressure.
Biden seems not be very creative, but he does not always destroy things. IT may be he is in a political bind, does not want to lose further Hispanic vote that moved slightly Republican way in 2020.July 13, 2021 8:05 am at 8:05 am #1990987chugibugiParticipant

The Democratic party of people such as Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy or Hubert Humphrey is ancient history. Today’s Democrats are socialists. Even those who claim otherwise have accepted the socialist dogma that the state should have a monopoly on decision making, and individuals should be obedient cogs in the state-run system. SO WHY WOULD THE DEMOCRATS BE CRITICAL OF THEIR FELLOW SOCIALISTS IN CUBA.July 13, 2021 10:43 am at 10:43 am #1991054jackkParticipant
This whole thread is one big fat lie.
I am no longer surprised by these posts and I have stopped commenting, but even I have a limit when reading lies.
Biden on Twitter yesterday at 11:30 AM.
“We stand with the Cuban people as they bravely assert their fundamental and universal rights, and as they all call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering.”
Biden in a brief exchange with reporters at the start of a meeting with mayors and law enforcement officials to discuss gun violence in the U.S said ,”“The Cuban people are demanding their freedom from an authoritarian regime. I don’t think we’ve seen anything like this protest in a long long time, if, quite frankly, ever,”
Besides the top Democrat and leader of the free world not being silent, his press secretary also commented.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday sought to frame the protests being driven by far broader frustration, calling the demonstrations “spontaneous expressions of people who are exhausted with the Cuban government’s economic mismanagement and repression.”July 13, 2021 10:53 am at 10:53 am #1991051
This proud Democrat supports the Cuban protestors and not the Communist government.
BTW supporting social programs does not mean one supports Communism or Marxism despite the posts in this thread.
B”H I make a considerable living and am more than happy to share the majority of it through both tzedaka and taxes that support social programs.

Outspoken socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez remained silent as of early Tuesday about violent protests erupting in Cuba, while Sen. Bernie Sanders finally spoke out — to blame US sanctions rather than decades of Communist dictatorship.
“All people have the right to protest and to live in a democratic society,” Sanders tweeted just before midnight Monday of the protests that started Sunday demanding “freedom” and the removal of President Miguel Díaz-Canel.July 13, 2021 11:52 am at 11:52 am #1991083

ctlawyer, I fully agree with you that social programs should not be conflated with support for murderous regimes. In fact, the correlation might have been forgiven in the naïve 19th century, but it is astonishing that same people in US that try to help poor people, also support communist countries.
This is not helping the cause of the poor with the rest of the population. If you know any of these activists, tell them!
As to Biden’s position, my info is from trusted lefty rugs, here is what they say:
March Psaki: A Cuba policy shift is not currently among President Biden’s top priorities
almost identical response a month later when pressed for reaction to Raul Castro stepping down as head of Cuba’s Communist Party.
while Biden voiced support for the protesters, describing the protests as a “clarion call for freedom,” much of his policy toward Cuba remains a mystery
questions on Cuba policy come as Biden has left largely intact Trump’s high-pressure, sanctions-heavy campaign against Cuba’s regime, despite campaign promises to the contrary.
They are concerned about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Cuba and the possibility that it could spill over into a migratory crisisJuly 13, 2021 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #1991197
CTLawyer -“There are plenty in the Yeshiva World who are dependent upon these social programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Section 8, SNAP, WIC, Sicial Security and rent controlled or stabilized housing”
First of all, I’m against Medicaid.
I wrote previously that the Country needs a Good Universal Medical Paying system. Eg. E/o on SuperMedicare.
Get rid of all others – this will make premiums go down. People that are poor won’t have to pay to get on it.
Second, all these programs were Created to appease certain segments of the population, not Jews.

Jackk, nobody expected Biden and top dems to straight away side with the Cuban government. His response means little. Question here is, why did it take so long for a response from Biden? Why are many democrats, along with the mainsteam media trying to shift the narrative surrounding the protests? Psaki: “There is every indication that yesterday’s protests were spontaneous expressions of people who are exhausted with the Cuban government’s ‘economic mismanagement…” or blaming the protests on “lack of vaccines..”
And oh it might just be worth noting what Psaki actually said about Biden’s statement “The statement…we put out in the president’s name this morning, in his voice of course”…
This is what the New York Times had to say about this “Shouting “Freedom” and other anti-government slogans, hundreds of Cubans took to the streets in cities around the country on Sunday to protest food and medicine shortages….”
Compare this to how all Republicans have responded. The contrast is stunning. Stunning and quite telling.
CTlawyer-The agenda that todays Democrats/socialists push extends far past the governments programs, which I think is really there up for debate. At this point its clear, that the democrat elites, along with the radical left, want to control what you think, control what kids are taught, and crush any opposing opinions. And the values they want the next generation to grow up with is abhorrent and disgusting. “And oh don’t you dear voice your opinion, you filthy racist” is what they tell anyone expressing concern. Pointing out that may in the Yeshiva World is NOT Anti-Semitic, it points out that all Americans can avail themselves of these social programs if qualified to do so.
I completely disagree with you opinion that all of the social programs I named (and I apologize for the typo in Social) were created to appease someone. I do not believe that to be the case with Social Security, Medicare or Section 8 (of the Housing Act of 1937). Section 8 and Social Security were New Deal programs to help pull the country out of the Great Depression, not appease anyone, Medicare, part of Johnson’s Great Society plan recognized that most American received their healthcare insurance from their employers and there needed to be a mechanism in place to allow retiring workers to BUY hospitalization coverage. I don’t think it was appeasing the elderly.July 13, 2021 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #1991229

They made Medicaid & Medicare to Push Liberalism on all US citizens!
From the NewYorker:
“On July 30th, Johnson signed the Medicare bill, in Independence, Missouri, with former President Harry Truman standing beside him. For the first time, the federal government would play a direct role in the health-care system. Most liberals wanted much more, but they understood that passing Medicare and Medicaid was itself a historic step.
With the passage of Medicare and Medicaid, decades of obstruction came to an end. But turning a legislator like Mills was not easy. Persuasion and negotiation could only go so far. It took a big election, with voters changing the balance of power on Capitol Hill, to get him moving in the right direction.”July 14, 2021 9:14 am at 9:14 am #1991398

Don’t bother trying to make Constitutional arguments, you are clueless. Congress is focusing in January 6th because their workplace, was stormed. It is federal property in the Federal District of Columbia and it is to be investigated by the federal government.
The riots that took place in the streets of cities across the USA are to be investigated by the states, if the riot was not on federal property. It is not the bailiwick of Congress to investigate. The feds can’t prosecute state crimes, it has nothing to do with equal application of the law. Different laws and jurisdictions are in play.
As far as I am concerned any rioter breaking the law anywhere in the USA should be prosecuted fully to the full extent of the applicable law by the appropriate legal authority. BUT>>>protest dopes not always equal riot and is not always illegal. the unlawful entry into the US Capitol on January 6th was criminal activity and should be prosecuted.July 14, 2021 11:34 pm at 11:34 pm #1991805Amil ZolaParticipant

Socialism comes down to the idea that the states should make decisions for you. The opposite of socialism is individualism, the idea that each individual can and should make decisions for themselves, and that the government should respect those decisions. By this standard, the Democrats have become very socialistic, feeling the the government should have a monopoly on decision making in most areas of daily life (just like their friends in Cuba).July 15, 2021 12:02 pm at 12:02 pm #1991948

Typical Lying Lawyer.
From the Justice Dept. Attorney General’s office:
District of Oregon:
“74 People Facing Federal Charges for Crimes Committed During Portland Demonstrations
Charges include assaulting federal officers, arson, failing to obey lawful orders, and damaging federal property
U.S. Attorney Billy J. Williams announced today that 74 people are facing federal charges for crimes committed adjacent to or under the guise of peaceful demonstrations in Portland since at least May 29, 2020. For more than 90 consecutive nights, Portland has been home to large demonstrations and protests against police use of force and anti-Black racism. On many nights, after peaceful demonstrations end, various public and private buildings have been the target of vandalism and destruction. Local, state, and federal law enforcement working to protect these buildings and ensure the safety of peaceful demonstrators have been subjected to threats and assaults from violent agitators while performing their duties. “Violent agitators have hijacked any semblance of First Amendment protected activity, engaging in violent criminal acts and destruction of public safety,” said U.S. Attorney Williams. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office and our federal law enforcement partners are expeditiously working with local and state law enforcement to identify, arrest, and prosecute these individuals that are disrupting the rule of law in our communities and physically attacking our law enforcement officers and destroying property. Violent agitators not only delay real reform, but make our community less safe by keeping law enforcement from responding to other critical calls for service.”
So why is the Congress having a investigation on Jan. 6 and NOT on the Federal Crimes that were Committed during the Riots of 2020 – 21?

Members of Congress are not subject to impeachment,
Article I, section 5 of the United States Constitution provides that “Each House [of Congress] may determine the Rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member.
Way back in 1798 the Senate ruled that its members are not subject to Impeachment, but could only be expelled. At the time they were debating holding an impeachment trial for a member who had already been expelled.July 15, 2021 11:12 pm at 11:12 pm #1992139

As a couple of people already posted, I also found it amusing that one of the first things administration is worried about is that Cubans should not try to get to US. I believe it is part of the airport security training that you look at first reaction on person’s face. Similarly here, first reaction is indicative of what these people are thinking about. So, we will now start catching people at the border and checking if they are Cubans before releasing them into US? Would Cubans be faking Mexican accent now?!July 16, 2021 3:11 am at 3:11 am #1992250

“Under Article I, Section 5, clause 2, of the Constitution, a Member of Congress may be removed from office before the normal expiration of his or her constitutional term by an “expulsion” from the Senate (if a Senator) or from the House of Representatives (if a Representative) upon a formal vote on a resolution agreed to by two-thirds of the Members of that body present and voting. While there are no specific grounds for an expulsion expressed in the Constitution, expulsion actions in both the House and the Senate have generally concerned cases of perceived disloyalty to the United States”
Yes, all the DemonCrats that voted for the investigation of January 6 and Not any other investigations pertaining to other riots by Leftists can be expuled by the rest. I think that what is left is Real Right wingers. It’s Unbelievable that all DemonCrats & some Repos are trashing the Constitution!
