Everyone who lives in nyc uses the typical directions to get to the mountains which is the palisades to the thruway to the NY17. usually it’s ok but on days like sunday/visiting day the traffic is unbelievable, u can sometimes sit on the for 5-6 hours in traffic, and my parents have sat through this coming to visit me and my brother.

Anyone have directions that most people dont use

I use palisades till Exit 18 (left exit) which takes you to a ’roundabout’ – a little circle – and then i think its the second right (?) which is Route 6 (cant remember if its East or West, sorry, anyone here who knows can clarify), which becomes Route 17 after a few miles (so you just continue on the same road- very easy). I never take the thruway, which I heard has awful traffic. The Route 6 way does get a little traffic-y on Fri afternoons, but I don’t think its nearly as bad as the thruway gets.

    From the Catskills

If you are near Route 52:

Take Route 52 South until the 84 East, 84 East until Exit 10-9W South. 9W South into the Palisades Parkway South (might have some traffic in town of Newburgh).

If you are near Route 42:

Take Rt. 42 South, (from Monticello, it’s approx. 20 miles) to 97 South until end (town of Port Jervis). Take 6 East for a few minutes (through the town of Port Jervis) to 23 South (for approx. 45 miles). When you see signs for 46 East, be prepared to bear right immediately then bear left to 46 East, to 3 East, to Lincoln Tunnel.

Or from 23 South, make left to 80 East to George Washington Bridge.

    From the 17 East:

    From the 17 East:

Take Route 17 until Exit 125. At Exit 125 take 17M East, follow all signs for 17M East. In Harriman 17M ends and turns into 17 South. 17 South will take you to the New Jersey 17. Follow signs for New Jersey 17 to I-80 East, to George Washington Bridge.

Or 4 East to George Washington Bridge.

Or Route 3 to Lincoln Tunnel.

Or Route 3 to US 1-9 to Holland Tunnel.

    From the Garden State Parkway:

(Take the Thruway to Exit 14 to the Garden State Parkway (GSP) South). Take GSP until Interstate 80 East or 46 East or follow signs to Lincoln Tunnel. You have many options – no commercial traffic.

    Up to the Catskills

    New Jersey 17:

To avoid the 3 West and NJ 17 merge delay, after coming out of the Lincoln Tunnel, stay on the 495 to the 3 West. Take the 3 West to the 120 North Moonachie. Take the 120 North to the 17 North. This will take you behind Giants Stadium.

To avoid the delays caused by the 2 lane merge on the NJ 17 North by National Wholesale Liquidators, take the 80 West (local lanes) to exit 62 Garden State Parkway North. Take the GSP to Exit 163 which is the NJ 17 North. Right before the exit, there is an overpass where one can see the traffic on the NJ 17. If it is backed up, stay on the Garden State Parkway until the Thruway North. If it is not backed up exit and take the NJ 17 North until the Thruway.

    From the Garden State Parkway:

If the New York Thruway North is backed up take the NY Thruway South to Exit 13 to the Palisades Parkway North to Route 6 to the NY 17.

From the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel:

Take the NJ Turnpike to the 80 West (local lanes) to the Exit 62 Garden State Parkway North. Right before Exit 163, there is an overpass where one can see the traffic on the NJ 17. If it is backed up, stay on the Garden State Parkway until the thruway North. If is not backed up exit and take the NJ 17 North until the Thruway.

    Staten Island to New Jersey

    Via the Goethals Bridge:

    Via the Bayonne Bridge:

Take Bay Street all the way to the right of the toll plaza. Stay on Bay Street which becomes Richmond Terrace (same direction as to the Staten Island Ferry) Continue on Richmond Terrace under Bayonne Bridge to Morning Star Road. Make a left. Go 4 blocks to Walker Street. Make a left on Walker onto Bayonne Bridge. Take Bayonne Bridge to the 169 North into the NJ Turnpike.

    Missed the Bay Street Exit?

    New Jersey to Staten Island

    From the Outerbridge Crossing:

    1) Take Richmond Parkway until the end, to

Richmond Avenue. Make a right onto

Richmond Avenue until the end to Hylan Blvd. Make a left on Hylan Blvd. Continue until the Verrazano Bridge.

    2) Immediately after Outerbridge Crossing, exit onto Page Avenue (this exit is 100ft after toll plaza). Take Page Avenue to Blvd Bkd. Make a left on Hylan Blvd. Continue until the Verrazano Bridge.

    From the Goethals Bridge:

Exit at Forest Avenue. Make a left on Forest Avenue.

Continue to Clove Rd. Make a right on Clove Rd. Continue over the Staten Island Expressway. Make a left and continue to the Verrazano Bridge.
