i think the mod should ban you because you are definitly not being serious– i want to have serious conversations, not conversations with a bunch of liars

im sorry for lying but i dont appreciate being insulted when im talking about a sensitive issue. if i want to keep the details of the faher that got me kicked out a secret i will.

back to the question: i learned that we do have bechira! definitely. however, the bechira is between good and bad. if something is neither good nor bad, then no we do not have bechira. for instance, deciding whether to paint your room blue or green – in this kind of situation we do not have bechira in what will be in the end.

it could be that i misunderstood my teacher, however, this is what i got out of it. please forgive me if i misunderstood.

Giggle girl: I don’t know of any Rishon or Acharon who says that. Then again, I don’t claim to know all of the opinions about Bechirah.

That’s sort of what R’ Dessler says.

R’ Dessler says that people don’t have Bechirah about huge or small things, only things within their range of where they are in life. It has nothing to do with whether the decision is important or irrelevant.

The posuk says clearly “U’bocharta bachaim”.

Only people have the capacity to choose. All other creatures do things based on instinct. So to answer your question: Do people have bechira? Yes.

you had the bechira to either stay awake or fall asleep in front of your Rosh Yeshiva and you chose to sleep. Bad move, ultrajew94,

    very bad choice.

giggle girl: the Rambam says that as a starting point. However, he continues that every decision is either a Mitzva if the choice is l’Shem Shamaim or and Aveira if otherwise. Therefore, he concludes that every single choice has Bechira.

Yes of course we have bechira in everything we do, what Rav Dessler says is that the when a person grows his battles are according to his level for instance R’ Moshe Feinsteins battle wasn’t whether or not to be mechallel shabbos. Its really based on a chazal “Kol hagadol mechaveiro yitzro godol heimenu”

Without bechira there’s no purpose in life on this world. Its our choices we make every day that decides what type of olam ha’emes we’ll have.

    Sam2: It’s a similar concept. That’s why I said “sort of.”

Parenthetically, I heard a really interesting shiur today that explained bechira with quantum theory. It was pretty neat. 🙂

More general – electron probability clouds, the uncertainty principle and “God doesn’t play dice with the world.”

Hmm. Sounds sophisticated. Anyway; who says he doesn’t play dice with the world?

Einstein’s ambivalence on the subject of God is actually very interesting.

In my small humble opinion, I believe that

every person was given the ability to chose his actions-not to be puppet in the hands of his master. “BaalHabooze”and “hello99”, good call with the rambam and parshas reah. we see many examples throughout the torah that humans have free will, besides for the ones that you mentioned. for example, the gemara in brachos (i think) says that “everything is in the hands of heaven accept for fear of heaven”. the mishna in avos says “everythig is known, yet permission is given”. The Tiferes Yom Tov says that even though Hashem knows our choices, His knowledge does not force us to act in that manner. I other words, we have a choice in how to conduct our daily lives.

Of course everyone has full bechirah. What your Rosh yeshiva probably spoke about (being it this week)is whether a person with his Bechira can harm someone else, like killing him, if H’ doesn’t want it to happen. There is a Zohar and a Ohr Hachaim regarding the brothers of Yosef throwing him in a pit full of snakes and scorpions. There is a lot of talk about it.
