No cheating! Do you, or do you not?

Only the first two stanzas. I don’t know anything after:

“now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,

its full glory reflected now shines on the stream,

Ti’s the star spangled banner oh long may it wave,

o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave”

Al regel achas, I believe it is as follows:

“Oh say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,

What so proudly we hailed, at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,

o’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there.

Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave,

O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave!”

At least that is how I have been singing it all my life. There are more stanzas, by the way.

I know all of them, but posting such long posts is really against the rules.

Oomis, you forgot the last two words: “Play Ball!”

Oomis, you’ve made a common mistake. The line isn’t, “THE bombs bursting in air” It’s, “Bombs bursting in air.”

My favorite is the last stanza:

Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand

Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation

Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation

    Then conquer we must

When our cause, it is just

    And this be our motto

    In G-d is our trust

And the Star Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave

O’er the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

PBA and redleg are slightly incorrect. Only the first stanza is our “national anthem”. The Star-Spangled Banner is an extended poem (the tune came later), which is quite beautiful and everyone should read and appreciate it. But the anthem is just one stanza.

And yes, I know all of the words to the anthem.

Thanks Sam2, when I said yes, I was referring only to the anthem and not the other parts.

I had an American History teacher in my BY school that had us sing the national anthem and pledge allegiance every day before class. And America the Beautiful too; “Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain…”

    Sam is slightly incorrect.

You’re all wrong. The title refers to the rational anthem, not the national anthem.

Look at the URL. The title was changed as a joke. And anyway, it’s the same thing, really.

yy: That was a mod edit later. The URL has “national”, which was the original title.

I googled the lyrics, and this is what I found. Please note line 5.

Apparently you and I have different versions of the same anthem.

    The Star Spangled Banner Lyrics

    By Francis Scott Key 1814

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,

Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,

In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:

‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,

A home and a country should leave us no more!

Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!

Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Some people hold that there are only three stanzas. The pacifists hold that the third is too violent, the atheists that the fourth is too religious.

All we sang in school was:

Oh say can you see? I can see perfectly.

Oh how horribly and wrong, to make us sing this stupid song…

The teacher gave up trying to teach us anymore…

I had an American History teacher in my BY school that had us sing the national anthem and pledge allegiance every day before class. And America the Beautiful too; “Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain…”

My 6th grade (public school) teacher made us memorize two verses of the National Anthem, as well as all the verses of “My Country Tis of Thee” and three verses of “America the Beautiful.” We also had to memorize “The American’s Creed” and the Preamble to the Constitution.

Each morning we said the Pledge of Allegiance, the American’s Creed, and sang one of the songs. Can you imagine that happening in a public school today? The teacher would probably be fired for not being multicultural enough.

I don’t know the words of the rational anthem, but I suspect that the general themes are about individual rights, and how the government is obligated to provide police protection of rich people’s property but not basic necessities for poor people. How regulation is stupid because it hinders the free market, but we should still have a mortgage tax deduction. How people who make $100,000 a year should pay 25% in taxes, but people who make 150,000,000 should pay 15%, or nothing at all. That the way to stimulate the economy is to give massive handouts to corporations, so that they can give the money to their executives as bonuses, but not to give the money to poor people or unemployed people, because they would just spend it.

The rational anthem is the same as the national anthem, only you stand on one leg when you sing it.

To whoever changed the title again: it doesn’t have words, it is a melody still being sung by the wind, the trees, the birds, et cetera.

    Oh say can you see,

    by the dawns early light,

the stock traders rushing to work,

    while ignoring the urban blight,

whose broad bonuses and bright computer screens,

    through the night after night,

o’er their upturned noses they watched,

    the stock ticker’s streaming,

    and the homeless guy’s glare,

    the pollution in air,

    gave proof through the night,

that they just did not care,

oh say does that 1 percenter yet wave,

to the college graduate pouring his coffee,

who’s probably to “lazy” to be saved.

Star Spangled Banner parody 1 (the National Phantom)

    Oh say can you see

    by Wall Street’s short-sight

    when democracy failed

    and investors were scheming

    with pinstriped suit and ties

    left the markets in scars

    from our sofas we watched

    as the nation was screaming

    Bernie Madoff’s great flare

of numbers high in the air

came crashing down in its flight

    my savings stripped bare

    oh say will that blood-spattered

    dollar still reign

in the land of corporate greed

and the home of the slave

    Parody 2 (the Natural Anthem)

    Oh say can you see

    my lawn’s burly sight

    It so sadly has failed

by your car’s gas that’s streaming

broad billows of smoke in a perilous flight

through ozone’s last layers, earth is drastically heating

and your gas grill’s big flare polluting the air

has ruined my plants; they are no longer here

Oh say was last winter the coolest in years?

“Oh, er, legislation is key, and the earth we must save.”
