I know the CR is not a Halacha Depot, however maybe somebody frum and learned knows the answer I am looking for.
WHat is the size and weight amount of dough we remove when baking and saying “Lafrish Challa”? Can you tell me in grams or ounces please.
Does this amount ever vary according to some poskim’s opinions?
And by the way, can anyone recommend a study guide for learning brachas?

It’s big. To Vaddai make a Bracha I think they say 4-5 pounds. And Rav Bodner’s Halachos of Brochos book is excellent. You also can’t go wrong learning it in the Mishnah Berurah if you can understand Hebrew well.

Sam2, you’re thinking of how big the dough has to be in order to take challah. I think always runs with scissors is asking What’s the actual amount that you have to take off
According to the Artscroll Siddur, it’s a kzayis. Also to learn brachos, I would recommend Rabbi Bodner’s Sefer on brachos and also Vezos Habracha by R’ Alexander Mandelbaum if you can read the hebrew. Rabbi Binyomin Forst’s sefer on brachos is also very good
Ah, A K’zayis Lechumra is generally accpeted to be 1oz. or 28 grams. If you live in CHU”L there really is no reason to be that Machmir since Challah is only a Minhag, but people seem to just take off a decent-sized chunk anyway.

its a handful better shaloa is how do u burn it a couple of us ladies looked into it a couple of yrs a go (dont know how or y) but we found out we all were doing it wrong…we all asked out own rav and were told most pp dont know how to do it right today..and then we were all told to do the same thing

yeshivaguy I know its a kzayis. WHat I meant is HOW MUCH DOES a KAZAIS weigh?
A Kezayis is a measurement of volume, not weight.
Bezalel, that’s a Machlokes in the Poskim. Many assume that it is weight.
A kizayis is approximately 34 grams if you want the largest shiur (1.2 oz).
I have a related question. Since challa is one of the matanos that can be eaten b’tuma and b’gvulin, why don’t we give challa to kohanim in Israel? I know that people consider most kohanim today to be of safek yichus, but we have plenty of m’yuchasim as well.
All Kohanim today are considered not Meyuchasim. You would need a Shtar proving it. No one has that.
Among ashkenazi kohanim, the Rapaport family is known to be meyuchasim. They have a shtar going back to the Sha”ch who is known to have had a shtar going back to Ezra. Historically, many gedolim who wanted to be podeh themselves on a kohen meyuchas went to members of this family. Sefardim have more families with yichus but I don’t know the genealogy. Maybe someone else here does?
Itche: I do not know about Sephardim. I do know about the Rappeport family but there are very few of them who still actually have a Shtar and I was told by some prominent Rabbonim that the Meyuchasim in the family and their Shtaros were lost in the Holocaust. It’s entirely possible that I (or they) have been misinformed because much of this is just what people hear. If some still have Shtaros then I will take back what I said.
