Something happened recently in a shul where a trustee stole a lot of money. I am not bringing this up to discuss the hows and whys. I am bringing this up to make a point. In every shul, school, etc. there should be checks and balances. ONE person should NEVER be in charge of the money because it is too be a responsibility and a temptation especially in these days of financial problems. There should be a checks and balances systems. Banks should be notifying 3 members if the mortgage isn’t paid. Two or three people should have to sign checks and signed checks should never be lying around waiting for just one more signature. Bank statements should be reviewed every month by more than one individual. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THESE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR GRANTED. It is better safe than sorry.

transparency is important as well.
a shule or any other organization should have financial reports every year.

B”H he was eventually cleared, but a good deal of heartache could have been avoided had everything been more transparent.
That’s another reason that Aries’ advice is very prudent.

And everyone (excluding Uncle Shmeel) is satisfied with the arrangement!
