When someone gives you a bandage when you need it, you may think it’s fair to give them one in return when you get a chance to buy some. But by giving someone a Band-Aid when they have no need of it, it implies that you wish them to need it. So don’t pay back a Band-Aid with a Band-Aid.December 24, 2014 1:51 am at 1:51 am #1049498
Lior: Most Poskim say that neighbors (and friends) aren’t Makpid on those little differences so it’s okay.December 24, 2014 1:55 am at 1:55 am #1049499
Don’t pay back a bottle of milk with another bottle of milk as it may be ribbis if the bottle you give contains a bit more milk than the bottle you received. So take a bit off first to insure that it isn’t more and ask the loaner mechila in case it is a bit less.December 24, 2014 2:00 am at 2:00 am #1049500
The bottle comes pre-measured.December 24, 2014 2:33 am at 2:33 am #1049501
They comparable measurements between one bottle and the next isn’t necessarily precise in regards to both being exactly filled to the brim.December 24, 2014 3:45 am at 3:45 am #1049502–ParticipantDecember 24, 2014 3:49 am at 3:49 am #1049503showjoeParticipant

If bottles of milk are not all equally full, the person who fills them is cheating some of the buyers.December 24, 2014 5:39 am at 5:39 am #1049506
Not necessarily. He may be giving some buyers more than they paid for and everyone else exactly what they paid for.December 24, 2014 5:48 am at 5:48 am #1049507
Rebyidd, very cute. Were you going through old threads, or were you mechaven(es)?

Off topic but when I saw this thread all I thought of was the Marvelous Midos Machine (I think!) song about nekamah “don’t pay back a bad deed with a bad deed of your own…”
Just sayingDecember 24, 2014 12:33 pm at 12:33 pm #1049509
Sam: That point would seem to help if you underpay (since as you said their mochel) but not if you overpay (since it is ribbis even if their not makpid.)December 24, 2014 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm #1049510
Lior: Not true. It’s not Ribbis because it’s normal behavior and the extra is just an everyday neighborly minute Matanah.December 24, 2014 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #1049511
The chashash ribbis is if the price of a container of milk goes up, but two bottles of pre-measured milk, even if one has ? oz. more, are worth precisely the same amount.December 24, 2014 7:13 pm at 7:13 pm #1049512
DY: Se’ah B’se’ah is a separate issue from the issue Poskim discuss of lending vegetables (where paying back a carrot for a carrot will necessarily not be precisely the same size).December 24, 2014 8:39 pm at 8:39 pm #1049513
I’m saying that this isn’t like vegetables because the two containers are considered identical.March 17, 2017 12:30 pm at 12:30 pm #1237853
At what point does one consider it not identical? Does it have to be visibly different, or can one bottle contain an extra molecule?
