I just watched a program that showed how pencil eraser’s are made and although most of it is rubber its the vegetable oil in it that gives it the ability to erase.

November 3, 2016 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #1190210Abba_SParticipantHow big is the eraser? How much oil could the chewer ingest? I think you should ask does the eraser require a hechsher? The erasers are usually smaller than an olive? Eraser are not considered to be edible and should not be a problem, although you should not go around eating or chewing them..
November 4, 2016 12:49 pm at 12:49 pm #1190211MenoParticipantWait what was the question?
Do the erasers need a hechsher? Or do the eraser chewers need a hechsher?
November 4, 2016 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #1190212Abba_SParticipantMeno Are you eating the chewers? So why would they need a hechsher?
He must have been asking about the erasers and was asking do the eraser chewers need to see a hechsher before they can chew on the eraser.
November 6, 2016 12:59 am at 12:59 am #1190213LightbriteParticipantMake sure your babies get a hechsher before they start teething
November 6, 2016 4:30 am at 4:30 am #1190214Abba_SParticipantlightbrite -You leave eraser around where babies can swallow them? Child Service will take them away from you if they catch you doing that.
Why do the babies need a Hecsher? I know you may want to eat them up, but you can’t.
November 6, 2016 6:40 am at 6:40 am #1190215YesOrNoParticipantSome kids chew on their shirtsleeves. Do shirtsleeves need a hechsher?
November 6, 2016 9:51 am at 9:51 am #1190216Abba_SParticipantThe difference is erasers can get stuck in the throat and C”VS the baby can die while with shirtsleeves all they are doing is sucking.
November 7, 2016 2:03 am at 2:03 am #1190217LightbriteParticipantI don’t let babies use erasers. You’re right it’s dangerous. That’s why I only allow babies to write with pens that use invisible ink.
November 7, 2016 4:09 am at 4:09 am #1190218Abba_SParticipantlightbrite -You leave pens around where babies they can suck on them and ingest the ink which may be hazardous. Your babies must be very smart if he knows to write. Does he write in block letters or script.
November 8, 2016 3:09 am at 3:09 am #1190219LightbriteParticipantAbba_S: Both of course
The invisible ink is made from translucent berries; it’s safe and digestible for babies. Ironically it makes most adults sick.
November 8, 2016 3:46 am at 3:46 am #1190220Abba_SParticipantlightbrite If the ink is invisible ,how can you read what they are writing. In fact maybe they are not writing at all and this is just a figment of your imagination that they write both script and block letters Also aren’t you concerned the child may swallow the pen.
Is this thread promoting a cannibalistic lifestyle as they require a hecsher for the chewers who it’s implied are humans very similar to the Hansel & Gretal story.
November 8, 2016 4:38 am at 4:38 am #1190221LightbriteParticipantThe pen doubles as a pacifier so no I am not concerned for his safety. Though I appreciate your concern.
The invisible ink is visible under a blacklight. Both script and block letters are impeccable.
This thread was originally about erasers and getting a hechsher for eraser chewers. I hope it’s not about cannibalism because that’s so unkosher.
November 8, 2016 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #1190222Abba_SParticipantlightbrite Interesting concept marketing pens in the shape of pacifiers. It would solve the problem of eraser chewers as they could chew these pens and the pens could come in different flavors.
As far as the eraser is concerned no hechsher is needed for the following reason:
A) The amount of vegetable oil is minute
B) Erasers are not a food.
The same question can be asked about a child’s thumb sucking, maybe he touched something that is not kosher and is ingesting some of it when he sucks his thumb. Also the thumb is an organ and you child is alive and it prohibited to eat a limb of a live animal. You might hold that it’s permitted because he isn’t consuming it,and so it’s less than the required amount. But we hold taste is like the prohibited items. So if a piece of hot meat fell into milk and you took the meat out if the volume of milk is less then 60 time the volume of meat then it’s prohibited. Do your kids thumb need a hechsher? I think not. You can always ask a rabbi
Please note this is only my opinion and is not to be taken Halocha limiser, as Jewish Law, nor as coming from Moses from Mount Sinai. The last thing I need is the IBT (International Brotherhood of Thumb Suckers) picketing outside my house so try not to publicize it.

If only more people thought like you before they spoke! Last year two families on my block were picketed by IBT. It was horrible. They blocked traffic all morning. I had to leave an hour earlier just to drop off the babies at preshiva (pre-K yeshiva, a step and a half above nursery school).
IBT is notorious for its lifesize baby billboards with derogatory messages such as, “Don’t oppose opposable thumbs,” and “My finger my mouth are none ya beeswax.”
Again, wise very wise of you.
