There are many types of Esrogim on the market. To name a few;
Yanover from (Italy), Chazon Ish, Kfar chabad, Taymani, etc..
What type is your minhag? & what do you look for in a Esrog.
big or small? green or yellow? smooth or bumpy?
our minhag is to buy Yanover.
what is yanover?
Do they advertise a lot? The name rings a bell.
i usually by gross but not for any specific reason, i just like the way they look

feivel – How do you get a glatt esrog and very bumpy at the same time; it’s a s’tira?
However, my beautiful esrog is grown in Eretz Yisroel and is: pale green; thick sturdy pitim; with ridges running from top to bottom and not bumpy like cellulite, totally clean- not even the tiniest dots anywhere of any color; with perfect gidul – pitim pointing straight up and aligned with stem which is pointing straight down; with stem area indented; not elongated or roundish; without a “gartel”; without bletflekin; with a top hechsher.
This type of esrog would sell for quite a lot more from the esrog dealers since you have to take into account rent and vastly higher profit expectations.
One that is kosher according to halacha and passes the “hadar test” of my wife.

in terms of shchita it also means that by being smooth there are no shailas that need to be asked
i meant glatt in the sense that there are no spots or other possible psulim that need to be clarified.
I treat myself every year to a very nice set. Yes, it costs me money, but I feel right doing it. My grandfather A”H used to buy nice sets also (I went with him a few times when he bought it), and he felt it was important, so I follow the same way.
This year, I was told by someone that they had a few of the really top-notch quality esrogim (the ones that in Brooklyn, you get taken into the back room and charged hundreds of dollars for) for a good price. I can honestly say I got the nicest esrog I have ever bought. Not one bletel on the entire thing, perfectly straight, nice strong pittum… it really looks like one of the ones you find in a picture.

I’ve always used yellow esrogim in the past. Can someone clarify the difference between having green as apposed to a yellow colored one? Just curious, Thanks 🙂

some shades of green can be pasul
yellow is always a Kosher color
some shades of yellow, though, indicate the esrog is overripe and may not last well through Succos
i just prefer green, no reason , it is more beautiful to me.
I was told by the esrog dealer I usually go to that the more bumps it has the more beautiful it is. I told her if she had bumps she wouldn’t be beautiful. But then again, she’s not an esrog.
I recently saw some that were about twice as large as what I’m used to. I’m not sure what kind they were.
if they are bumpy they are less likely to be from grafts, which are assur.
My only requirement for an esrog (aside from the kashrus, obviously) is no pitom.
When my kids were little, I was always afraid that if I got one with a pitom, they’d break it off; so I “played it safe” and always bought without. Now that my kids are older, I simply continued doing so.

I have heard that the esrog growers send their better esrogim to America because that’s where the money is. And the wholesalers send their Brooklyn rejects to out-of town shuls and Judaica stores because the money is in New York and out-of town don’t have the discriminating mind set.

I ask around my schul to find out who paid the most for an etrog, and then go spend $5.00 more than that person paid.
bh – wow do u like go thru each person and say s/t about them? anyway, it has nothing to do with but I LOVE SUNLOWER SEEDS! i didnt have them in years? is papyot in hebrew?

I don’t think a gartel is a hiddur, it’s a personal preference. My father happens to like the way it looks, so he buys one with a gartel if he can.
Buying without a pitum is not a problem at all, but my brother told me it’s brought down that having a pitum is a hiddur.
