Why is YWN not posting my forum on Standard time and how it’s causing chillul shabbos?
I’m sorry if it sounded like I was attacking the Aguda.
Can you please post it? It’s very important.

    Happy new year,

I haven’t seen it yet but if I think it’s saying the benefits of keeping DST all year so people can start Shabbos an hour later and thereby sacrificing davening after netz

    I agree 100%

If we had Daylight Saving Time all year it would cause many people to have difficulty Davening Shachris and putting on Tefillin at the right time. Jews have managed with short Fridays for a very long time, like 3300 years or so, so לכאורה most have it under control more or less. You could always move to Florida where Shkiya in winter is almost an hour later anyway.

The problem only began in the 19th century when dividing the day into 24 equal hours was introduced. Before that, everyone used local times based on dividing the daylight, and the night, into 12 hours each (as we still do for many purposes). The change was due to the lobbying of the railroad and telegraph companies which some sort of standard time. If the current system is a problem, consider moving closer to the equator since then your difference between summer time and winter time will be much less

    Shimon Katz,

We didn’t have daylight savings time 150 years ago

It’s the loss of the hour that messes people up

Hello?? Are you gonna post my comment or not?? Should I just give up to the “elites”, and assume shabbos is not important? Only davening with a minyan after netz?

    Coffee Addict,

“Happy New Year” was complaining about NOT having daylight savings time during the winter, which results in “loosing” an hour of Friday afternoon.

YWN won’t post my full message. I guess it must have sounded chutzpadik to the Agudah. But you get the idea I’m trying to make.
In the USA, people work from 9-5 Monday through Friday. In NY/NJ area, if you follow the first Shkiyah (not Rabenu Tam), work ends a full 30 minutes AFTER shkiyah, directly causing chillul shabbos, which the Agudah is purposely fighting to cause.

The fact that this is an old issue is IRRELEVANT. Once we abolish Standard Time, people will get used to figuring out the Shacharis issue, and everything will be fine.

Shabbos is more important than Davening before Netz.

Unless the Aguda paskens we can follow Rabenu Tam, or convinces all the wives to let us move to Florida.

    1) Nobody is forced to work until 5 on Fridays in the winter.

    2) Most of us make it into Shabbos by the skin of our teeth no matter how late Shabbos starts.

The reason this is important is because you work for a big company that requires you to work fixed hours, does not care about your timeline and would not even let you take half a day to work from home. Find a better employer or have your own business and you feel better.

It is actually a halachik question – controlling time is equivalent to avdus. It is reflected in halocha: if you are an employer, you should give employee time before dismissing them, but should allow them to leave any time (except if suffering losses) – if you force him to give you a notice, you are making him an eved. So, choose the job or a business where you can better control your own time to make yourself a free person.

I think the complaint is more the switching between on and off DST so people don’t get used to one way or the other

That was what changed from 150 years ago

So we need to all rise up and boycott the agudah, who is directly responsible for this.

To be clear: this is not a personal, domestic issue. What happens in an individual household, is between you and your family. I’m talking about the STANDARD workday in the USA, not some personal complaint.
If you have timing problems, that’s an individual issue.

To be more clear: EVERYONE working at a job in the USA is forced to work until 5pm Friday. Thats a FACT!
IF people get exceptions, good for them.
We are discussing the public national issue, that Agudah is fighting against the frum yidden in America; we should rise up and force them to actually care about us.

    שב ואל תעשה עדיף

Let the government decide, why should the Agudah fight against frum yidden. Who said your blood is redder?

For what it’s worth, in Russia they have Daylight Savings Time all year round, among other reasons in order to avoid the issues that arise from suddenly changing the clock. If you like that, then I guess you could say that just like a broken clock is right twice a day, so can Russia be on the right side of one issue…

There are jobs that you don’t have to work until 5PM on Fridays during the winter. There are thousands of people working for goyim that are in Shul for mincha erev Shabbos no matter how early shkiya is. If you work for a business that won’t let you out early enough maybe that’s not the place you should be working.

So can we all sign a petition to the Aguda, like the Berkowitz guy, who raised DWI awareness?

Let’s go get 45k signatures and force the Aguda to stop the chillul shabbos!!

    #2481552

Happy, sorry I did not hap the issue first. You are talking public policy, not a personal gripe.

You are right. Seems that Aguda puts priority on accommodating those who are already machmir on shabbos and are trying to have a comfortable shaharis while making it hard to those who are struggling with the schedule of shabbos and might suffer a lfinancial loss and even those who might not keep shabbos under such stress. My guess is that the second group is larger and issue is more important indeed, although they are less likely to be Aguda members, which explains the organization’s stand that is, unfortunately, pretty consistent.

Once we change the clock to Daylight savings, the shuls will be packed with frum ppl davening shacharis at Netz. They will figure it out.

If you can’t do that, then you shouldn’t have that job.

Say the same thing back to you. The problem is there. Just you dont care because ppl figured it out.

    They’ll figure out shacharis

Happy new year: YOu should notice that YWN takes much longer to post these “coffee house” postings than news postings, perhaps related to the lack of advertising revenue. Wait 24 hours before whining. — Also many if not most employers do not have 9-5 jobs. Federal civil service (largest employer in the country) allows one to work 6:30 am to 3 pm on one extreme, and as late as 9:30 am to 6 pm, with provision for adjusting work schedules as needed (and especially for religious hours as long as doing so does not create a real hardship for the employer). Frum Jews who don’t want problems can always stick to lower paying jobs within the frum community or being self-employed so you can set your own hours.

You can say the same thing to these who are concerned about shacharis.

Get a lower paying job?? Proves the point of my forum here precisely
