Dare I write that I had the concern cross my mind this morning that after reading that the Great Avigdor Miller, Z’L among other of our esteemed rabbinical leaders have said that a Jew should not celebrate Thanksgiving (that was what was reported in this forum just recently), I must wonder if the same fervor applies to fathers day and mothers day.

Do the ultra orthodox observe this custom? Just curious.

I can not say that I am the biggest fathers day spender, but that said, my father finds that it means alot to him to have this a celebration.

I wish to offer the best wishes for a great Fathers Day to all of the fathers out there! I hope to join your ranks some day if it be the will of Hashem!

I will be spending part of the day with my father, and yes, it is because it is Father’s Day. If you believe that that’s wrong, too bad — I’m going to see him anyway.

Although l’halacha we are supposed to show kovod to our parents EVERY DAY all the time, nonetheless, it is nice to take a special day out to do something extra-nice to show our appreciation and love. I would give ANYTHING to still be able to do that for my parents zichronam l’vracha, who have been gone almost 18 years.

We celebrate those days with our children and grandchildren now.

Personally I think fathers day, mothers day, thanksgiving and even valentines day is a great thing, but that said, I will not be privy to boycotting western holidays in a nation that has given so much to allow me to live in freedom and practice my faith as it is meant to be followed.

I find it very sad that there are people who think that today they have to show kovid to their fathers…. you need to show kovid to your father EVERYDAY!!! Unfortunately I only had that zechus for 10 years!

Basket of radishes: All the days you mention with the exception of valentines day are American secular comercialized holidays. Valentines day, although thoroughly commercialized has Xian origins and celebrates a “saint”.

I see nothing wrong with mothers day, fathers day, thanksgiving or even grandparents day, but the saints day is something else.

..that the Great Avigdor Miller, Z’L among other of our esteemed rabbinical leaders

-Sorry for writing so strong (I’m a ZeesKite, on the fly), it seems that ridiculing OUR Torah leaders are one of your strong points. To me – YOU’VE BLOWN YOUR COVER.

I cannot be silent over a disgrace to the Torah or its Sages and Leaders. I think if one posts on a Torah-oriented site, it should conform to the minimal of Torah and Hashkafa standards.

    Dear Moderators,

I write with Torah as my guide. Your refusal to publish comments which clearly are productive and call upon the list to understand my comments that have been criticized is akin to stealing from me.

This is a form of theft and if you really wish to be known as upright and orthodox, I suggest you post all that is not unorthodox on your web site. This is a place of learned debate.

You are smearing me among our people and I am feeling aggreived. Thus you have violated Torah in another way as well.

I will continue to post and hope that we can all be friends in the world to come as that will likely be where we will all meet among the people of our generations.

    Best wishes and Kul Tov,

    B.O.R.

a psalm to answer “zees kite”:

    Oh LORD,

The message of the day is that

Whomever challenges the work of the rich

Should be penalized by the work of the poor.

What has happened to integrity and scholarly debate?

What has happened to the twig that supplants the branch that has stopped its growth?

What has happened to the choices that the trustworthy ensure that our children can make?

    But what about the trustworthy?

Who are they and whom do they trust?

If they trust in our God, do they make that known to the world?

But if they trust in the work of the wise are they simply a scoffer?

@B.O.R. how can you call someone stealing when all they do is deciding (right or wrong) what to allow on there own site. There are some house rules to comply whether you agree or not, one of those rules is to respect our gedolim.
