I have scoured YWN countless times in search of opinions, definitions, and understanding of Modern Orthodoxy and Ultra Orthodoxy. It seems to be a really messy topic, covering a vast amount of topics and hashkofas. Through all of my research, I believe I have finally found the best way to define Modern Orthodoxy and Ultra Orthodoxy:
If you use a green, pink, or purple toothbrush you are Modern Orthodox. If you use a toothbrush of any other color you are Ultra Orthodox. If you do not use a toothbrush at all… well…
August 31, 2011 4:36 am at 4:36 am #804393brotherofursParticipanti guess that makes me modern? .. owner of a purple toothbrush 🙂
August 31, 2011 4:42 am at 4:42 am #804394AbellehParticipantNice. I’m also modern. I think R’ Alyashiv’s toothbrush is blue, so I guess he’s modern just like me…
August 31, 2011 4:44 am at 4:44 am #804395aries2756ParticipantI use a battery operated tooth brush, does that make me a martian?

you must be very old time orthodox, as they did not have toothbrushes thousands of years ago.

However, MO believe it is so holy that it can only be worn One Day each year. That Day should be Yom k’Purim. However, the color Black is inappropriate for Yom k’Purim. Hence, it is worn on Yom Purim itself.
August 31, 2011 6:35 am at 6:35 am #804398YW Moderator-42ModeratorHow about floss? Some people use loose string, others use those floss on a stick “plackers”. Does one’s choice in this define his level of Orthodoxy?
August 31, 2011 9:26 am at 9:26 am #804399mamashtakahMemberHow about battery operated. Does that matter?
August 31, 2011 9:57 am at 9:57 am #804400600 Kilo BearMemberI’m as UO as you can get while still using the Internet and not being a member of any faction of NK. My toothbrush is green; I just buy the first one I see on the rack that is not overpriced and of good quality whenever I need a new one and I don’t pay attention to what color it is.
August 31, 2011 11:07 am at 11:07 am #804401charliehallParticipantMy toothbrush is blue and white. I’m Ultra Orthodox! Can’t talk more; I have to run to Rabbi Dov Linzer’s daf yomi shiur.
August 31, 2011 12:04 pm at 12:04 pm #804403apushatayidParticipantWhat about those who soak their dentures instead of brushing? Does it depend on the brand of cleanser used for soaking?
August 31, 2011 12:53 pm at 12:53 pm #804404midwesternerParticipantDr. Hall: You should know that blue and white signifies something totally different!
August 31, 2011 1:24 pm at 1:24 pm #804405babygooseParticipanti guess the one who doesn’t use a toothbrush at all is chassidish orthodox
August 31, 2011 1:24 pm at 1:24 pm #804406collegegradMemberI use a battery operated toothbrush. It’s mainly but the brand is written in blue letters. What does that make me?

And there I thought they only used black and white toothbrushes 🙂
August 31, 2011 2:08 pm at 2:08 pm #804409charliehallParticipantI guess my toothbrush is Zionist and I am Ultra Orthodox?
August 31, 2011 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #804410AbellehParticipantThere’s a tosafos commenting on the Chozen Ish’s perush on Malachi who discusses electric toothbrushes. He dismisses the hava aminah that electric toothbrushes are kefirah, and says that you should go by the color as though it was normal.
August 31, 2011 6:56 pm at 6:56 pm #804411apushatayidParticipantWhere does this leave someone who uses a black toothbrush but relies on the heter to brush during the 3 weeks and sefira?
August 31, 2011 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #804412TomcheMemberHe is a sheigitz.

That is not Orthodox at all, it was so open that whatever remnants of orthodoxy remained fell right out.

September 1, 2011 12:58 am at 12:58 am #804415Josh31ParticipantWe are talking about Orthodontic Judaism.
With Ultra Orthodontic Judaism your mouth looks like a major construction zone.
With Modern Orthodontic Judaism, the braces are hidden.
If your teeth are crooked and you can not afford either, then you have to go the Sunglasses and / or Hat route.
For under $100 you can get a large enough Hat (Black or otherwise) or loud enough pair of Sunglasses that no one will look at your teeth.

Well, if thats the case can we openly point out some of the confirmed child molestors in the Frum Community?…Becasue I’d love to name names to protect our children.
