I started towards a degree some yrs ago through one of these programs that you can get credits through excelsior. over abt 5 yrs I got most my credits from one place and they said I have to do the rest on my own. I’m not great with the clepping thing and I took some of these Jewish tests like TTI and AHS for my general ed credits. At this point in my life I’m working full time but I would like to at least finish off my BA (and maybe one day actually take a Masters in who knows what!)

I probably have about 15 credits left I think in Math and English to finish off a liberal arts degree butI’m not sure exactly b/c I dont want to enroll officially in Excelsior till I know what my plans will be b/c they charge you per year.

I would take online courses for it but I really don’t have the budget for $1000 a course which is what some of these costs. Has anyone gone through the process with a much cheaper option that was actually helpful to them? I’d love to get some tips and guidance from the oilam here!

try taking an NYU language test… If you are able to talk conversational hebrew or yiddish then u’ll get credits from that… tell me if you are and i’ll explain the process to you… you can get up to 16 credits on each one…

    University of Wyoming-about $300, University of Phoenix-about $500, and Utah State University-about $600, for 3 credits.

It may be worthwhile for you to invest in a tutor for math and English CLEPs because: 1. CLEP is likely the cheapest way to go, even with tutoring; 2. These are 6 credits each as opposed to online courses which are usually 3 credits.

Music lover- thanks- already got the 16 credits for the language nYU test. All I need I think is regular English and Maths.

Think for just a minute. IS that the real and final prices? Do you have experience with them?

Tomim Tihyeh- I see, the only thing is someone once told me that excelsior requires more than the clep for english. Do you know anything abt that?

Thanks Have a Good Yom Tov!

seriously the math clep is really really not hard… (i got in the 70s without studying) i would def tell you to clep it even if your not graet with cleps… just brush up the techniques and take it….

the english clep on the other hand is not so easy… would you be willing to enroll and take just english in your local community college? cuz the prices for local colleges are amazing, if you live in that district…

Also if you’re a female, you can look into Sara Schnierer College, its a division of mercy college and you can take english there, plus they get an automatic discount from mercy so its cheaper then regular mercy college..

Shkoyach, I know people who only took the English CLEP for Excelsior, but there’s only one way to find out for sure: call Excelsior!

I went through Excelsior College/ Raizel Rite for my B.S

W/o clepping or similar options you don’t have too many (cheaper) alternatives.

-Excelsior College does have an English Comp test which isn’t difficut which if I remember correctly was around 300$ when I took it.

    – Both math cleps are relatively simple.

I took a few Jewish subject exams through TTI which you might be able to take even if you are not a member.

    Good luck.

Thinkforjustaminute, those numbers seem to be way off.

    – LSU has correspondence courses that run about 250 per course. Be warned there is a good amount of work, but you can do it on your own pace, and take up to 9 months to complete a class:

    http://is.lsu.edu/

    – San Juan College has cheap online classes. This summer it was 70 a credit, I think they are raising it to 90 or so. I’m taking one class here and I am pretty happy with it:

    – If you use instantcert (http://www.instantcert.com/), clep and dsst tests can be pretty do-able. They have a system of flashcards and forums that discuss what you need to know that really works. A few very easy tests are Analyzing and Interpreting Literature and the dsst computer test (can’t remember off the top of my head what it’s called). There are a few more that are also not bad. It’s also only 20 bucks a month.

    – ALEKS is a great way to get credit for math, if Excelsior accepts it. I know Thomas Edison does. It teaches you how to do the math and gives assessments, and when you get 70% on an assessment you can submit it to ACE to get credit, then request a transcript when you are done. There are multiple levels of algebra – beginning, intermediate, college – and several statistics levels, and you can take them all if you can handle it. It’s only 20 a month and 40 for a transcript when you are done.

    shkoyach, sberger:

I (or a friend) have taken classes at all the colleges I mentioned, and that is about what they cost per class. I just got an email that U of Phoenix is rasing their prices effective July, but if you prepay for a class you can get the old rate.

    Maybe I am missing something:

    http://www.uwyo.edu/fsbosupport/docs/accountsrec/Semester_Tuition_and_Fee_Schedule.pdf

    Tuition Resident Nonresident

    Undergraduate $ 94.00 per hour $ 358.00 per hour

    You said:

    University of Wyoming-about $300, University of Phoenix-about $500, and Utah State University-about $600, for 3 credits.

Did you mean 300 per credit? Or did you mean for a resident? Am I missing something?

    ONLINE COURSES

Online courses are charged special tuition only rates as follows:

    1. Undergraduate online courses: $227 per credit

You said: Utah State University-about $600, for 3 credits.

This one is not totally off, I suppose.

    Associate’s Bachelor’s

    TUITION(per credit*) $345 $530 * Most courses are 3 credits

University of Wyoming charges instate tuition for distance students and University of Phoenix tuition for non-degree seeking students is $166/credit for most classes including the ones that I took.
