Fonts & Italics For Posts

I see some posters can do all sorts of thing with their text. How are these things done? And does spell check also exist from a post screen?

I can copy / paste from Word (when I get stumped on a spelling) but lose the font details.

Any tips?

italics- place the word em in <> and then the text and after put /em in <>

Bold- place the word strong in <> and then the text and after put /strong in <>

Whew! that was confusing to write!!!
