November 6, 2013 4:53 pm at 4:53 pm #985776Bookworm120ParticipantTry to work your way to trying only a small sampling of each dish. I know, it’s tempting to try everything, and all the more so, taking second helpings of the foods that taste good! But anyway, the secret is only taking a little of everything.
Good luck! 🙂
November 6, 2013 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #985777SaysMeMemberfill your plate once and thats it. And no, not overflowing or piled up!! If u mean between meals, only allow yourself one snack (or none). Then again, these tips may be pointless because you have to start where you’re at and build slow

November 6, 2013 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #985780akupermaParticipantAssuming you aren’t an exercise fanatic, excessive eating leads to becoming fat. Then you start experiencing symptons such as blurring vision, loss of feeling in limbs, problems in the body processing food and removing wastes, difficulty sleeping due to having to wake up frequently, etc. Then it will be much easier to diet. Remember the famous saying, that the sight of the gallows helps one focus one’s mind. Once you see food as an invitation to a reception given by the local hevra kaddish, it will be easy to eat less.

November 7, 2013 5:30 am at 5:30 am #985785VogueMemberTry taking two fifteen minute power walks every day and power walk when you need to go somewhere. I pretty much alway power walk and walk about four miles or more a day, but if you don’t have that much time, take a fifteen minute walk in the morning and one after dinner.if its cold, try doing three sets of 20 sit ups every other day and on alternating days, do three sets of ten push ups and the plank excercise for two minutes.

Why should they wake up with half of MY body on the floor, it’s they who’s overweight. (Unless the pushed half of MY body off..)

November 7, 2013 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #985789streekgeekParticipantLOL! And I have the opposite problem. Anyone have tips on how to make myself taste foods? I have panic attacks if I even fathom tasting something I’ve never did. To date I eat like maybe 20 different things. And as much as like what I have for breakfast, lunch and supper everyday – I’m thinking maybe it’s time to experiment with some more foods. And I feel bad for my kids one day, they’ll have the same things to eat for every meal, every day….

November 7, 2013 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #985792streekgeekParticipant@keepitcoming – I know! That’s why I’m wondering how to start tasting them myself. If kids see their mom disgusted by something, they probably wouldn’t touch it. I thought my pickiness is something I would grow out of, but it’s not!!
So I used to survive on caffeine – you know, mainly coffee and chocolate. But medical concerns made me drop caffeine like hotcakes:( So I had to find alternatives. Now it’s mainly whole grains (I personally like whole wheat a whole lot better than white)and poultry/meat. I do not touch fruits or vegetables or anything dairy…I just can’t bring myself to! I find that I barely ever crave food, which is great for my figure. I seriously only eat when my stomach grumbles and says it’s time. I’m wondering if I was really starving, would I would eat things I would never dream about touching?
And btw, that’s streeKgeek, with a k 🙂

November 7, 2013 6:18 pm at 6:18 pm #985795yytzParticipantIt’s possible that you really need all that food. More likely, you’re eating too many carbs and not enough fats and protein and fiber, which make you feel more full. Try eating a big healthy breakfast with carbs (whole grains) but also a lot of fat and protein and fiber. The meals in the rest of your day won’t be as big, and you can avoid snacking as well.
The chassidic sefer Likutei Eitzos has some mystical interpretations of the phenomenon of eating greedily. In case you’re interested, here are some of them.
“Be careful not to gulp your food down hurriedly like a glutton. It was Esau who said, `Let me swallow some of this red pottage’ (Genesis 25:30). Get into the habit of eating at a moderate pace, calmly and with the same table manners you would show if an important guest were present. You should always eat like this, even when you are eating alone. Happy is the one who achieves this! (Chayey Moharan, Avodat Hashem, 69).
Whenever you feel a sudden strong impulse to eat it is a sign that there are forces which hate you. This sudden appetite for food is caused by the animal part of your nature. You must break the animal impulse. Then you will be free from the clutches of those who hate you (39).
Gluttony leads to divisiveness and strife. The glutton is an object of contempt. Other people look down upon him: they have no wish to help him, on the contrary they put all kinds of opposition in his way. But a person who succeeds in breaking his greedy impulses will find peace. And peace will also reign in the realms above. A profound and wonderful contentment will reveal itself in the world (Ibid.).
When a person manages to break his desire for food, God works miracles through him (Ibid.).
When a person eats greedily it is a stain, as it were, on the honor which is due to God’s holiness. The more disrespect that is shown to God, the more the arrogant start to assert themselves. The nations of the world abrogate to themselves all the glory that is due to God. They flaunt themselves and boast, and receive the world’s respect and deference for it. God hides His face from the world and the Divine aspect of severe justice prevails. But when we break the desire for food, God shows favor to the world. The aspect of severity is withdrawn. The honor due to God’s holiness is restored. The arrogant are humbled and lose their power and influence (67:2,3).
Never eat more than you need. If you eat unnecessarily it can be very harmful. Even the food which the body needs is then joined with the extra food and causes great damage (257).
The time when we are eating is especially suited to working on ourselves to develop the fear of Heaven. We should be careful to take advantage of the moment and cultivate this fear in our hearts (Ibid.).”
November 7, 2013 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #985796keepitcomingMemberwow i hear . all makes sense but its like breaking an addiction. not like it is. i have a serious addiction to food. it isnt abt me being healthy or loosing weight. just abt controlling my self which is soooo hard 🙁
November 7, 2013 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #985797streekgeekParticipantMac and cheese? Eeeeewwwwww! I usually don’t get revolted by smells of food I don’t eat. But some I can’t handle, say green olives. However, I rarely get nauseous from seeing food. Thank God!!!! And I forgot to mention a biggie, I do eat homemade baked goods. So don’t think I’m a tiny underweight nothing, I’m actually very average.
