They are talking about global food shortages. Doesn’t any food grow in America? Does it all come from overseas?
May 23, 2022 12:45 am at 12:45 am #2089704Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantRW, “global” means in the whole world. America produces same foods as Russia and Ukraine, except maybe sunflower seeds of which Ukrainians seem to be the world leaders, so buy those in bulk now. Check for bugs and shells. But as markets are global, it will affect prices.
May 23, 2022 5:47 am at 5:47 am #2089720rightwriterParticipantGlobal meaning there will be a shortage of food.
May 23, 2022 9:37 am at 9:37 am #2089758akupermaParticipantAmerica is a food exporter (except for luxury crops, such as out of season fruits). Thus there is no danger of a food shortage in America (absent something catastrophic such as a nuclear war). There can be distribution issues (often caused by unwise government policies), but they work themselves out. The worst that happens in the US is higher prices (since there is a global market and shortages elsewhere result in higher global prices).
Eretz Yisrael does rely somewhat on imported foods, and along with the rest of the Middle East, will have shortages (meaning higher prices) due to the disruption of food exports from Russia and Ukraine. Thus American farmers instead of selling wheat to an frum bakery in Brooklyn for “X” dollars, will sell it to a bakery in Israel for “X+Y” dollars, which will give “Y” dollars of extra happiness to the American farmer.
May 23, 2022 11:16 am at 11:16 am #2089865rightwriterParticipantDo why the media warnings? Is it just to raise prices or is there something to it
May 23, 2022 11:17 am at 11:17 am #2089869GadolhadorahParticipantMarkets can adjust relatively quickly. Some countries already are limiting exports of their local staples (cooking oil, rice,m wheat etc). There will be periodic shortages of certain products but unlikley to be be long-term shortages unless there is a long-term drought from global warming or something unrelated to Russia.

May 23, 2022 1:29 pm at 1:29 pm #2089890ujmParticipantGlobal Warming is science fiction.
May 23, 2022 3:25 pm at 3:25 pm #2089913Amil ZolaParticipantAmericans don’t really think about where their food comes from. I live in an area that is a breadbasket and use fruits and veg that are in season. I really think twice before I buy a lemon for $1 that has been shipped over 3K miles. For items like coffee, I buy locally roasted beans.

May 23, 2022 4:09 pm at 4:09 pm #2089938ujmParticipantAmil: To be a good progressive, you should be sticking only to consuming locally harvested coffee.
May 23, 2022 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #2089980rightwriterParticipantujm to be honest , there are some things progressives and liberals get right. And one of those things is eating healthy. They will preach to you to “follow the science” and to trust government and media, but when it comes to what they consume or do for their health, they trust noone. Just like when they advocate for everyone to live together and mingle but they live in some Ivory tower far far away from the inner suburbs and from the people they protest for. Go figure but Chacham Halomed Mikol Adam you can apply to this i guess(as far as personal health goes). Obviously their politics and agendas are horrible.
Btw Amil does the shipping ruin the produce or is it how they are stored in the process thats the problem? Also beware of any produce from China. The fruits vegetables and fish are very problematic and may not even be real just like the plastic infused rice that was uncovered coming out of China. Theres a reason why the $1 bag of frozen fruits at Key Food are so cheap, they come from CHiiiiiiNNNNAAA!!(Trump voice)
May 23, 2022 10:43 pm at 10:43 pm #2090041CHOOSIDParticipantTHERSE NO FOOD SHORTAGE IN BORO PARK!!!!!!
They need food they should speak to us chassidem!!
Were not running out of kugel.
Litvocks.May 23, 2022 10:46 pm at 10:46 pm #2090000Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantRe: shmurah matzah – if anyone is in the business, I suggest ordering shmurah and regular matzah from Ukraine now. They are overflowing with grain that Russians are blocking in Black sea. So, making matza or any other long-lasting product would make economic sense for everyone.
