So, no one has anything to say about this? No one has anything productive to say about how we are rapidly becoming targets around the world? How it is becoming acceptable to just shoot at any random Jew? Ok, so here is a lesson I am taking from this. I am no longer entrusting my safety and the safety of my loved ones to the “system”. I trust in G-d and my own hishtadlus. I think thats a wise choice for anyone these days regardless of religiosity. Enlightened “governments” of the past didn’t help us. (they were mostly the attackers)
March 19, 2012 10:56 pm at 10:56 pm #861174I think most of us are either still in denial or we simply don’t know what to say. Something like this takes a bit of time to sink in.
As for me, I honestly don’t know what to say.
Selfishly said, though, I am glad I made the decision to move to Gateshead from E”Y. When I was looking to leave E”Y I had job opportunities in, among others, Marseille, Prague, Dublin and Newcastle. I chose to go for the Newcastle one (FYI, Newcastle = Gateshead, like NYC = Newark but much closer and tighter) because I knew France is much more problematic with the Arabs there. Besides, what is an Ashkenazi shtreimel-wearer going to do between the Moroccans. (No insult intended, I know many Moroccans and have absolutely NOTHING against them – but I think everyone understands what I mean.)
Anyway, I decided against Marseille because I feared such things would happen. I guess I was right.

March 19, 2012 11:55 pm at 11:55 pm #861176Sam2ParticipantApparently this wasn’t solely anti-semitic. The gunman has struck 3 times, targeting a different minority each time (he hit Arabs too).
March 20, 2012 12:30 am at 12:30 am #861177writersoulParticipantThey say it was possibly neo-Nazi, which is also pretty scary.
By the way, Chassidishe Gatesheader, I don’t see what this has to do with France. The really scary part is that it could happen anywhere.

The ugly face of Jew-hatred has struck again in Europe. This time, in southern France. The victims are:
Yonatan Sandler
Gavriel Sandler
Aryeh Sandler
Miriam Monsonego
The attack occurred on the second day of the week of Vayikra. This corresponds to the second Aliya of the week. Sheni of Vayikra begins with the following verse:
????? ???-?????? ????? ??????????, ???????: ?????????? ???-?????????, ??? ???-?????? ?????????–???-??????????
And if his offering to the LORD be a burnt-offering of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtle-doves, or of young pigeons.
?Those murdered today are a Korban Olah – a burnt offering to atone for all of us.
What was brought?
?? ????? is the gematria of 745.
???? ??? ?? ???? ?????? (Miriam Chana bat Yaakov Monsengo, HY”D) with the Kollel is the gematria of 745.
Also, the beginning ? and ending ??? of the phrase “?? ?????”spell Miriam.
??? ????? hint to the sons of ????? – Yonatan Sandler, i.e. Gavriel and Aryeh Sandler, HY”D.
The rest of the phrase:
?? ?? ??? ????? ?? ????? is the gematria of 860 with the 4 words.
????? ????? – Yonatan Sandler, HY”D, is the gematria of 860.
May those who were murdered today be an atonement for all of Kelal Yisrael.
March 20, 2012 9:48 am at 9:48 am #861180Avi KParticipantCG, this is a direct result of the anti-Semitic atmosphere throughout Europe, which some have said is reminiscent of the atmosphere on the eve of the Holocaust. Britain is no different with its mix of Islamists, nationalist extremists such as the BNP and soccer hooligans. Eisav hates Yaakov.
March 20, 2012 12:56 pm at 12:56 pm #861181@Avi – sure, the UK has trouble also, but generally I believe France is worse.
By the way, the same things happen in E”Y. Remember the Merkaz HaRav massacre? I lived almost around the corner there when that happened.
The worst part of this is that you can never entirely prevent it. One who wants to commit terror attacks can easily do so – even if it’s just a single person with just a gun and a scooter. He could do it another 10 times and get away with it each time. You simply cannot put armed guards everywhere, on each possible location; a person cannot be alert to that level continuously anyway, so the guards themselves might get killed easily as well.
Ultimately I doubt the perps (I doubt it’s just 1 guy) will get caught, due to serious research, old fashioned detective work. But they’re not going to get caught by an armed policeman standing in front of some school.
March 20, 2012 1:59 pm at 1:59 pm #861182BTGuyParticipantHi oomis.
You ask a great rhetorical question that has prompted me to give an opinion that Obama is largely responsible.
When a United States president, for the first time in history, shows such a strong level of contempt, disrespect, and aggressiveness to Israel and all things Jewish, he fanned the flames of the nutjobs out there, around the world, who are the antisemites.
And when you add the the fact that the American media, has for too long, taken on a bias of anti Jewish and anti Israel propaganda, I hate to say it but such a mixture is not too far removed from the original ingredients leading up to y’mach shmoe Germany.
March 20, 2012 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #861183Ken ZaynMemberthis is a direct result of the anti-Semitic atmosphere throughout Europe
Many Americans believe Europe is very anti-Semitic whereas the USA is not. Read on:
The ADL Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents, released today, found that the number of anti-Semitic incidents increased slightly in 2010, to a total of 1,239 incidents, compared to 1,211 incidents reported in 2009. It is the first increase reported by ADL since the numbers hit a record high in 2004, when the U.S. experienced 1,821 incidents of anti-Semitism. Since 2004, the total number of anti-Jewish incidents had declined incrementally each year.
The ADL Audit tracks incidents of vandalism, harassment and physical assaults against Jewish individuals, property and community institutions across the U.S., using reports and data gathered by the League’s 30 regional offices and law enforcement.
A nationwide survey released by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) shows an increase in the number of Americans with anti-Semitic attitudes, reversing a ten-year decline and raising concerns that “an undercurrent of Jewish hatred persists in America.”
A national poll of 1,000 American adults found that 17% of Americans – or about 35 million adults – hold views about Jews that are “unquestionably anti-Semitic.”

You are absolutely correct, BUT – don’t talk about doing “my own hishtadlus” on this site or you will be labelled an apikores. YW commenters are all tzadikim g’murim, and as such need only rely on more tefila, learning, teshuva, etc. – and HaSh-m will do the rest. To say you have to do hishtadlus means you don’t REALLY have emunah – at least to many contributors here.
I wont repeat it now, – but I’m sure most of you know about the guy in the flood and the rowboat that came to rescue him…
March 20, 2012 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #861185Sam2ParticipantKen Zayn: I don’t believe that survey. 1000 is far too small a sample size to be significant in a country this big, especially with so many sub-demographics.
March 20, 2012 5:19 pm at 5:19 pm #861186HealthParticipantAOM -Hey, I believe in defending myself and people should carry non-lethal weapons. I discussed many times here with the laws in the US to use firearms even in your own house will cause more damage than good. If they ever change the laws, then I’d say buy a shotgun for protection at home and at school.
