After the second makkah, all the Moroccan, Syrian, and Yemenite Jews left Egypt. As the passuk says, ??????? ????????????? ??????? ?????????????.

Also, Sefardi frogs are not allowed to lend money with Ribbit.

    Someone talking about me?!?

(I don’t think it’s proper to make light of a passuk)

LAB: You do know that Syrian, Moroccan, and Yemenite Jews don’t refer to themselves as Sefardim, right?

Well yallili only gives two options. (Yes, an example of “Jewish” music.)

LAB: Sefardi, meaning Spanish, generally only refers to Iberian/North African Jews and their descendants (including those who left Spain after the Expulsion). Many Persian, Syrian, Yemenite, Bucharian, Romaniot, and more are very insulted when they are categorically stereotyped as Sefardim. They have their own Minhagim on many things and, while they are closer to each other than they are to Ashkenazim, deserve to be recognized as such.

I hear that. But Vesaru HaEdut Mizrachim Mimecha.. does not have the same ring to it.

Sam, only the Teimanim aren’t Sefardim, and nobody considers them such. The shape of the Sefer Torah is the dividing line.

HaLeiVi: I dare you to go up to an Iranian and ask him if he’s Sefardi. I’d wear a helmet before trying though.

I actually did that today, based on this thread. He said yes (then qualified it a bit, but no helmet required).

Sam: though I agree with you that Iranian Jews don’t want to be called Sefardim, as they are not, if you really wanted to be PC you’d call them Persians, not Iranians, which I believe has some German/Aryan connotations.

    Thanks, Mod.

    For what?

    for re-membering Little Froggie (you’re welcome -100)

Mammele: Different Jews from modern-day Iran prefer Iranian and others Persian. It depends on several things. But yes, Persian is the more common preference. I should have said that.

Isn’t it too bad? We don’t call Germans Duetch. We give them the English name. The Russians have a Russian name for them. Israelis call the US, Artzot Habrit (how would Israelis like if we call them Brits?).
