After the second makkah, all the Moroccan, Syrian, and Yemenite Jews left Egypt. As the passuk says, ??????? ????????????? ??????? ?????????????.
Also, Sefardi frogs are not allowed to lend money with Ribbit.December 24, 2013 6:18 pm at 6:18 pm #996081
Someone talking about me?!?
(I don’t think it’s proper to make light of a passuk)December 24, 2013 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #996082
LAB: You do know that Syrian, Moroccan, and Yemenite Jews don’t refer to themselves as Sefardim, right?December 24, 2013 10:00 pm at 10:00 pm #996083
Well yallili only gives two options. (Yes, an example of “Jewish” music.)December 24, 2013 11:33 pm at 11:33 pm #996084
Sam2 – Did not know that! Care to fill me in?December 24, 2013 11:42 pm at 11:42 pm #996085
LAB: Sefardi, meaning Spanish, generally only refers to Iberian/North African Jews and their descendants (including those who left Spain after the Expulsion). Many Persian, Syrian, Yemenite, Bucharian, Romaniot, and more are very insulted when they are categorically stereotyped as Sefardim. They have their own Minhagim on many things and, while they are closer to each other than they are to Ashkenazim, deserve to be recognized as such.December 25, 2013 12:39 am at 12:39 am #996086
I hear that. But Vesaru HaEdut Mizrachim Mimecha.. does not have the same ring to it.December 25, 2013 5:00 am at 5:00 am #996087
Sam, only the Teimanim aren’t Sefardim, and nobody considers them such. The shape of the Sefer Torah is the dividing line.December 25, 2013 5:59 am at 5:59 am #996088
HaLeiVi: I dare you to go up to an Iranian and ask him if he’s Sefardi. I’d wear a helmet before trying though.December 25, 2013 6:11 am at 6:11 am #996089☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant

I actually did that today, based on this thread. He said yes (then qualified it a bit, but no helmet required).December 25, 2013 3:51 pm at 3:51 pm #996090Bookworm120Participant
HaLeiVi – You’ve just given me a horrible earworm. Little Froggie, do you like worms as much as you like flies? If so, you can have it. 😀

Ok Mods. Over and out. In denial now! Could I have my quiet self back?December 29, 2013 6:18 am at 6:18 am #996094MammeleParticipant
Sam: though I agree with you that Iranian Jews don’t want to be called Sefardim, as they are not, if you really wanted to be PC you’d call them Persians, not Iranians, which I believe has some German/Aryan connotations.December 29, 2013 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm #996097
for re-membering Little Froggie (you’re welcome -100)December 29, 2013 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #996098
Mammele: Different Jews from modern-day Iran prefer Iranian and others Persian. It depends on several things. But yes, Persian is the more common preference. I should have said that.December 29, 2013 6:42 pm at 6:42 pm #996099
Isn’t it too bad? We don’t call Germans Duetch. We give them the English name. The Russians have a Russian name for them. Israelis call the US, Artzot Habrit (how would Israelis like if we call them Brits?).
