Beacon’s post in the humorous posts thread made me think about funny vanity plates I’ve seen. I knew a dentist with the plate LMN8 DK. Years ago I was on a highway and noticed a vanity plate DAYGLO. When I looked at the automobile itself I realized it was a Dodge Neon.
Please share funny or interesting plates you’ve seen.

February 27, 2009 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #700595YW Moderator-39MemberThe absolutely WORST license plate to have:
NOTAG
One guy who had this on his motorcycles was once mailed hundreds if not thousands of tickets. Why? When a car does not have a license plate the officers write on the ticket “NoTag”

It’s “eliminate decay”
Once, in the central US in December, I saw a cloth-top with the plates “W84SMR”.

Would want to run that by the YW Editor to make sure I am not violating anything by doing so (namely: Loshon Hara)
However, I am fairly certain I can give you a peak at two:
1. Calvin & Hobbes on the Bailout (a link to a comic)
2. get yourself kicked out of the CR (do i need to divulge why this wasn’t posted)
We could do a weekly award of “Most foolish post, topic started etc.” but that would only encourage “them”

February 27, 2009 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #700604bobthebuilderParticipantTwo out of the five days this week while driving on the Merritt Pkwy I found myself behind the same white car with the (CT) license plate XERXES.
* How odd to be behind the same car on a fairly heavily trafficked pkwy two different days.
* Interesting tag, how apropos this time of the year.

March 1, 2009 5:57 pm at 5:57 pm #700612JosephParticipantAnyone notice the vanity plates designed to fool ticket-writers? Like substituting zeros (0) and the letter O, or the number 1 and the letter I.
March 1, 2009 6:02 pm at 6:02 pm #700613asdfghjklParticipantJoseph: i know that those who have specilty plates, like VAS get off easy!! the cops write the VAS as the first 3 letters & according to ”grid lock sam” that saves them from the ticket!!!
March 1, 2009 6:21 pm at 6:21 pm #700615JosephParticipantasdf, the Cops usually never write a ticket to VAS (Volunteer Ambulance Service) plates.
qwerty, I once got someone a plate, something like, Z0OM 5O0O (notice the confusing altering of 0’s and O’s.) He got a few thousand dollar worth of tickets that were written out incorrect and hence dismissed as defective.

Sorry, I find this hard to believe. I remember Gridlock Sam saying that the 0 vs o was not grounds for a ticket dismissal.
Could be in another state I guess
March 1, 2009 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm #700617JosephParticipant39, the meter maids mostly wrote the tickets out w/the wrong plate # in the first place – and he could just throw it out.

1st of all, tickets now are not done by hand, they are done with a barcode reader and the registration.
2nd of all, I remember a gridlock sam article where someone asked why 1 ticket was written with a 0, and another was written with an o. He asked if he had grounds for dismissal (with at least 1 ticket). The reply was that a o or 0 reversal would not be judged as “incompetence” by any traffic court judge
March 1, 2009 7:15 pm at 7:15 pm #700619qwertyuiopMembermod39: this is the U.S., not the U.K..$ :0
March 1, 2009 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #700621JosephParticipant39,
1. It was pre-scanning days.
2. Now you can merely scratch off a bar (prior to applying the sticker), forcing the meter maids to write it out manually.
3. If the summons has an incorrect plate #, the ticket was effectively never written against your vehicle and you can discard it.
4. If you choose to challenge it, it is legally flawed (in NYC at least) and an ALJ will dismiss it.

With the exception of 1 thing. People do not necessarily differ in how they write the letter O and how they write the number 0. I remember CLEARLY that Gridlock Sam (former NYC Traffic Commissioner) saying that the computers, and judges did not view a 0 as different than an O (and that the computers often searched for the possibility of both).
In other words, calling a tan car brown was not in the same league as a 0 vs. an O.
I think we have both made our respective points. If I can locate the gridlock sam I will. But I respectfully suggest we not continue this discussion.
March 2, 2009 5:46 am at 5:46 am #700626asdfghjklParticipantJoseph: in my area they do give VAS plates tickets!!!!
3. If the summons has an incorrect plate #, the ticket was effectively never written against your vehicle and you can discard it.>/em>
with that being the wrong on the ticket-incorrect plate#, cause they wrote the VAS as the first 3 letters & not as a specialty plate=dismissal!!!!
