For adults who need to gain weight, Ensure is recommended. However, Ensure is OU-D.

    1. Do you know about the halachic status of Ensure? Is it more assur or less assur than other Chalav Stam products?

    2. Do you know if there other Chalav Yisrael products that do the same job?

3.Do you have any suggestions for people who need to gain weight and keep CY?

A Rav paskened that Ensure can be taken for medical purposes, but let’s suppose that the person refuses to drink it since it is not CY (and by the same reasoning that got them into this situation in the first place.)

    1. Do you know about the halachic status of Ensure? Is it more assur or less assur than other Chalav Stam products?

    Less for two reasons.

    1) Probably not made from liquid milk, and there’s a leniency (not universally accepted) for powdered milk.

    2) More of a need than for most people, so R’ Moshe’s recommendation of “ba’al nefesh yachmir” would be less applicable.

This doesn’t address the opinions that don’t agree with the heter of R’ Moshe, or hold that the heter doesn’t apply based on today’s milk supply system, and don’t agree with R’ Tzvi Pesach Frank’s heter of powdered milk (even if indeed it’s made of powdered milk).

It also doesn’t address the issue of treifos caused by DA, while supposedly, those animals are removed from the CY milk supply. I’m told that the gedolei haposkim in E.Y. held that today’s “chalav stam” is actually chalav treifah.

    2. Do you know if there other Chalav Yisrael products that do the same job?

    No

3.Do you have any suggestions for people who need to gain weight and keep CY?

    Milk shakes.

There are pareve shake powders made by NutriMax, and GNC, but I don’t know the caloric content.

Actually, I don’t think there’s one with the GNC label, but GNC stores sell Spiru-tein.

    Yes. Pesach all year.

    Pesach all year.

My stomach hurts just thinking about it.

DaasYochid: Thank you, that was extremely helpful (as usual) 🙂 I will look into the GNC products.

I would appreciate personal experiences in GNC vs. Ensure, if anyone has.

popa: For some reason, most people who need to gain weight lose weight over Pesach.

Good idea. Next pesach I’ll just decide that I need to gain weight.

I recently heard of a J&J new product that is like Ensure, unless I am hallucinating again…

Please note that only a few flavors of spirutein have a hechsher.

this is not because all the others are non-kosher but because the manufacturer only had those flavors when they got the hechsher and havn’t expanded the kosher list.

some of the other flavors may not be kosher, you should stick to the few that have the hechsher

a protein drink such as this can be used to gain or lose weight,

depending on whether one uses it to replace a meal or in addition to regular meals.

It’s not on their website. Maybe it’s too new.

Popa thinks this is naarishkeit. Ice cream works much better than ensure. Also chicago style deep dish pizza.

    Popa's pizza, by aurora77

(I should mention that I never wrote down that recipe, and I google for that thread each time I make a new batch of dough. Each batch is good for 3 of my pizzas, so it lasts 3 weeks of motzei shabbos.)

Popa, you clearly do not have experience with this issue. Ensure is balanced and ice cream isn’t.

Fakert, I have much more experience with gaining weight. I’m telling you exactly how it’s done.

You can balance the ice cream with a reisman’s brownie bar. Perfectly balanced. Carbs, proteins, fats.

I really want to have some of that deep dish pizza. Maybe on Sunday I’ll make it.

No, it’s only for motzei shabbos.

You should rise the dough in the fridge over shabbos.

Well, then, can you please give us the real recipe?

You should only eat it Motzei Shabbos or only make it Motzei Shabbos?

That was the Motzaei Shabbos recipe (think of your Carlebach thread).
