Sacrilege – bourbon trivia… which bourbon wears a gartel?

    Hint – intials are BH.

Why do people wear a gartel over their jacket? Is it not good enough if you wear it over your pants?

What other alcoholic drink wears a gartel?

    #726725

    Popa,

Do you mean through the loops (i.e like apushatayid)?

popa_bar_abba – there’s also an inyan of hachanah for Tefila. Additionally, if you wear a regular belt & a gartel on top of it (under your jacket) – it may be a shailah of hotzaha on Shabbos, as you are only allowed one belt on top of each garment, not 2. (Chagurah al gabai chagura)

No. Gartel = waist material! 🙂

Again, I am not asking why there is a minhag to tie a black cord around one’s waist before davening.

I am asking why that black cord is specifically tied over the jacket (where it looks absurd), instead of under the jacket.

    Does anybody know?

Are we talking about a neck gartel or a waist gartel?

I have no idea, but am going to take a guess…

Probably, so it can be SEEN (clearly differentiating). I highly doubt its a fashion statement.

Sacrilege – Frangelico – although that has a very low alchohol content, not sure if it counts….

popa_bar_abba – I wrote – if you wear a regular belt & a gartel on top of it (under your jacket) – it may be a shailah of hotzaha on Shabbos, as you are only allowed one belt on top of each garment, not 2. (Chagurah al gabai chagura)

Most people wear a regular belt on their pants & putting a gartel on top of that – under their jacket, might create a Shabbos problem.

I’m also not sure why it looks absurd. Why is it more absurd than a necktie???

The shabbos reason could possibly be why.

I think it looks odd since it scrunches up your jacket.

Wearing a gartel on top of your jacket or under the jacket; with a belt or without a belt; or no gartel at all, is no problem whatsoever of hotza’ah on Shabbos.

popa_bar_abba – I don’t remember exactly where, but I think that Rav Moshe ZT”L in the Igros speaks about wearing a gartel under one’s jacket on Shabbos.
