So I peek over and see someone obviously engaged in some Torah study. Happens to be he’s learning out of his phone. Then his Gemarah (or sefer) starts to ring!
Ever see anyone talking to his Gemara?

May 1, 2012 3:56 am at 3:56 am #871587yitayningwutParticipantI’m sure he knows what enables him to concentrate best.

May 1, 2012 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #871589HaLeiViParticipantDo you kiss the Gemara before loading another page, before shutting the browser app or when shutting the power?
May 1, 2012 10:55 pm at 10:55 pm #871590147ParticipantThe answer to your observation “peaceful” is that B’H that gentleman is utilizing his phone for Gemorro study & not for some sports commentator or jazz.

Technology in some ways have made learning so much easier. I too have a gemara on my phone– I can learn where ever i am.
When i go to a mall with my wife, i dont have to tag along a safer, i can take out my phone, learn a daf, or learn some halacha– without anyone thinking I’m nuts (after all it is perfectly normal to read the news on the phone the whole day).
It is only when I am at home, and my kids see me learning- i use a regular gemorah– as it is hard for them to know the difference!
This is what technology was made for!
May 1, 2012 11:16 pm at 11:16 pm #871593Sam2ParticipantI spend countless hours learning every day on e-daf.com. Someone once had the Chutzpa to tell me that if so, I’m not ever M’kayim Talmud Torah. I said back that even if he’s right, at least I know a bit of Gemara (as opposed to him).
Someone once tried to tell me that Osios Machkimos doesn’t apply when learning electronically, but I’m not sure why that would be true.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some people tried to say that about printed seforim circa 1500.

And so what? We’re talking about Torah SheB’al Peh here, right? Considering that, ideally, we should be learning it by heart, what’s the point of stressing concepts such as “Osios Machkimos?”

May 2, 2012 2:07 am at 2:07 am #871596Sam2ParticipantWolf: The Gemara itself does say Osios Machkimos in reference to Torah Sheba’al Peh (or, at least, everyone assumes it’s talking about TOSHB”A).
