Many ears ago, befor modern educashun in the new millenium, one problem in skools was baseic speeling and grammer. To conbat this and rays acheivement, teechers were adviced to start at the very begining, at the yungest age. Ones they had managed to breath new life into leessons, progres came quicklie- sucess was then garanteed. How many speeling errors would modern skolars identify in this paragraph?

August 21, 2011 3:00 pm at 3:00 pm #881500haifagirlParticipantHey! I’ve got a thread named after me. Cool! Now I just have to read it.
August 21, 2011 4:11 pm at 4:11 pm #881501old manParticipantI agree with Haifagirl’s attitude on spelling and thought expression. It may be difficult for young minds to appreciate this, but the quality of one’s writing greatly influences the degree that the thoughts expressed will be understood and even accepted. For the lamdanim here, please read the stories of Reb Chaim Brisker’s self editing and draw the conclusion.
August 21, 2011 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #881502candy613Memberhey haifa girl now that you have a thread named after you, its time to see if i really know who you are at the end! I have been so sure for so long!
August 21, 2011 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm #881503MiddlePathParticipanthaifagirl, whether or not other people here appreciate your grammatical input, I think it is nice to have someone here that sees the importance of it. I would not mind at all if you corrected me on my grammar, and I view it as a privilege to have you here offering your grammatical help to those who need it. If others don’t want to be corrected, fine. But feel free to correct me when necessary, and I will appreciate it.
August 21, 2011 5:31 pm at 5:31 pm #881504minyan galMemberHaifa: I feel the same way as Middle Path. I try my very best to use good grammar and proper punctuation (hey, that is alliteration). I also endeavour to use the English language in the fashion that it was intended to be used in. Sometimes however, I do slip up. Please feel free to correct me at any time. If I start getting lazy with language (more alliteration) in the CR, where I do a lot of posting, then it will spill over into my daily life. I have to write reports and letters for various committees on which I serve and certainly want them to be a proper reflection of me – a person with an excellent command of the language. So, I appoint you the official grammatacist (does such a word exist?) of my postings. I would love to appoint you as the official CR grammatacist but I don’t believe that I have the power to do so. That appointment shall have to be left to the Mods.
August 21, 2011 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #881505YehudahTzviParticipantAs a professional writer (albeit, comedy) I appreciate Haifagirl’s grammar zealotry. English is a wonderful and now universal language and it shows intelligence and class when it is spoken and written correctly. Many time I have been asked “Are you eating by the _________s on Shabbos?” My reply, “Oh, no. I’m actually planning on eating AT their house.”
August 21, 2011 8:11 pm at 8:11 pm #881506YehudahTzviParticipant“times” Sorry.

August 21, 2011 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #881508ToiParticipantI get get my grammar kicks from the book title ‘Eats, Shoots, and Leaves’. A very worthwhile read. but grammar police on the internet is really not appreciated.
August 21, 2011 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #881509chocandpatienceMemberSame as MP, MG and YT above. I love the English language, but never studied grammar past high school level. I would appreciate any corrections (with a short grammar lesson, please) to my posts.
August 21, 2011 9:51 pm at 9:51 pm #881510Moshiach please comeMemberAnother thing about grammar, I know someone who tends to say ok let’s make a picture when the real way to say it is let’s take a picture! It kind of makes more sense to say it that way if you think about it.. Why does take come into the picture! Where are you taking the picture to??!! You are making the picture. So it kind of makes sense but is not acceptable grammar. The English language is supposed to be the most sophisticated language in the world, if it’s not your first language you are doing pretty well! – Haifa girl-.

Now that the human spell checker no longer posts, it is convenient that the Chief of Grammar has returned to keep us all on our toes
August 21, 2011 11:56 pm at 11:56 pm #881512deiyezoogerMemberIts the digitel age, people no longer need to know directions, they use a GPS. They no longer need to have good penmanship, they type. They no longer need to know how to have a proper conversation, they text. They no longer need to remember anything, they use externel memorry devices. They no longer need to know how to add and subtract, they use calculators. They no longer need to know how to spell, they use spellcheck. Bottom line all those devices that are ment to mike life easier just helped create a less smart more shallow sociaty.

August 24, 2011 4:26 am at 4:26 am #881518ronrsrMemberGood communications skills and good spelling and grammar are merely consideration for your reader and listener. No one wants to be incosiderate, does he?
August 24, 2011 1:53 pm at 1:53 pm #881519ToiParticipantEvery single post about the values of good grammar and punctuation has had some sort of typo within. I would suggest that it’s a siman from Above. Stop the grammar police. I don’t want it.
August 24, 2011 2:44 pm at 2:44 pm #881520wanderingchanaParticipantA typo here and there can be forgiven. We have been typing on computers much longer than we have been texting. When you have a whole keyboard in front of you, there’s no reason to type as if you have press keys 8 times just to spell “you”. “U” is 2 eights on a phone, so just go for 3 and type on “you” on the keyboard. Also, backspace is only one keystroke. Is it really that much more effort?
August 24, 2011 3:21 pm at 3:21 pm #881521on the ballParticipantIf a mistake in grammar or punctuation becomes common enough then surely it has just naturally become part of the language. Languages evolve; they are not set in stone. Go and read some English literature written a few hundred years ago and it is totally different. Nobody made an official declaration about what can and cannot be done – it just happened on its own.
I think the mistaken use of the apostrophe with the plural ‘s’ and with the word ‘its’ (possessive) fits this category
August 24, 2011 11:24 pm at 11:24 pm #881522deiyezoogerMember“Deiy,
Did you do that on purpose”
NO, I just didn’t proofread what I Typed. And for the record I am a cronical misspeller. (Aldough I think that for someone who learnd the langeuge mostly as an adult I’m doing “gantz gut”)

I have another place in cyberspace where I also hang out. Since over there the people rarely have typos and almost never have grammatical errors, that’s where I choose to spend the bulk of my online time.
