Huh?!? I’m stunned. If Hello Kitty is not a cat, then I’m a … (fill in the blanks)….
Some other stunnning facts are coming out about Hello Kitty:
I’m so glad this is a top news story today. You can read it in the LA Times and Huffington Post, see it on CNN and CNET(!). Now is the time to make your travel plans for the first ever Hello Kitty Convention in LA from October 30 – November 2 (after you take your sukkah down).

I just read an update from Sanrio (the manufacturers of Hello Kitty) that they meant she doesn’t act like a cat, but she is obviously the personififation ot a cat. Sorry Sam, I guess we’re back where we started 🙂August 31, 2014 2:18 pm at 2:18 pm #1038802
Does that mean Arthur the aardvark is a person too? I have always been confused by the apparent separate social distinctions between the sentient, bipedal animals and then their nom-sentient housepets of the same species.
In layman’s terms, how come Binky the dog gets to wear people clothes and go to school, while Pal, Arthur’s dog, is treated as a mere housepet?September 1, 2014 12:36 am at 12:36 am #1038803
Bookworm: For the same reason that Mickey Mouse has a friend who’s a dog (Goofy) and owns a pet dog: It’s a mystery!
Although seriously speaking, my guess is that they want to give characters pets, and what else could they do?September 1, 2014 12:38 am at 12:38 am #1038804
Yehudayona, that’s actually not true. She was invented by Yuko Shimizu, a Japanese woman.September 1, 2014 3:04 am at 3:04 am #1038805
Actually, she’s a real person, and it’s not her fault she looks like a cat without a mouth.September 10, 2014 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #1038806
IvduEsHashemBsimcha – They should have people for pets!
Planet of the Pets, anyone?September 10, 2014 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #1038807
Bookworm, if you consider them a lower life form, then they should go down the scale and have plants for pets.September 10, 2014 6:18 pm at 6:18 pm #1038808my own kind of jewParticipant
Bookworm: The difference is in that one word “sentience.” If you are sentient, you are a “person.” If you are not sentient, then you are not a “person.”
of course, defining “sentience” is a very….difficult matter. Once of those things where you can point to it and say “that’s sentience!” but giving an actual definition is much harder.September 11, 2014 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm #1038809
Interesting points, everybody. 🙂 I like your point, my own kind of jew, about sentience. That could very well be the defining factor between Binky and Pal. Binky and HK are, in some way, persons (i.e. sentient beings), while Pal and Charmy Kitty are not.
My next theory is that these are futuristic, mutated beings from the future, descended from humans or perhaps the subject of genetic experiments, trying to imitate the relatively successful culture of the late 20th to early 21st century in hopes that their society will thrive better. 😛
Arthur and Hello Kitty are science fiction!September 12, 2014 12:28 am at 12:28 am #1038810
You are forgetting that Pal is a puppy. Always a puppy. Binky is a dog.September 12, 2014 12:49 am at 12:49 am #1038811
Yeah, but Kitty and her cat are both kitties.September 12, 2014 4:20 am at 4:20 am #1038812
It’s her cat. Pal is Arthur’s puppy, not Binky’s.September 12, 2014 4:37 am at 4:37 am #1038813
True. Do you think Binky would ever get a pet aardvark?September 12, 2014 12:15 pm at 12:15 pm #1038814
Binky might get a pet baby aardvark, and it wouldn’t grow up either.September 12, 2014 5:37 pm at 5:37 pm #1038815
Doesn’t Arthur have a baby sister?September 12, 2014 7:29 pm at 7:29 pm #1038816
Same species as the rest of the family, so she’s not a pet. In the Arthur universe the pet can’t be the same species as the owner.September 16, 2014 2:35 am at 2:35 am #1038817wannabechasidishMember
all my years, i was never able to figure out exactly what arthur is (what kind of animal)September 16, 2014 3:33 am at 3:33 am #1038818
@wannabechasidish – Arthur is an aardvark (aka “ant-eater”). He looked a lot more like the real-life long-snouted creature in the original Arthur books by Mark Brown. I think there’s a story about Arthur getting glasses where he frets about how the glasses will make his snout look long or something like that….September 16, 2014 4:40 am at 4:40 am #1038819
Aardvarks are similar to anteaters.September 17, 2014 2:56 am at 2:56 am #1038820wannabechasidishMember

There are slight differences.September 18, 2014 3:14 am at 3:14 am #1038825
Right. Likewise, wolverines and wolves are different creatures. And they have little to no similarities. 😛September 21, 2014 8:29 pm at 8:29 pm #1038826
“Hello Kitty Convention in LA” ?!
Song parody, please! (But it has to be good.) Anyone up to it?
[“Atheist Convention in LA” – Journeys (Abie Rotenberg)]September 22, 2014 9:58 am at 9:58 am #1038827cozimjewishMember
The plane took off on schedule from La Guardia
On a bright clear sunny summers day
What a cheerful trio they appeared to be
to the Hello Kitty convention in L.A.
Bao-Yu was a teenage girl from China
From Japan, Akemi had travelled all the way
And Huan journeyed from Hong Kong, her homeland,
With the clouds below…..they were on the go
To the Hello Kitty convention in LA.
“I’m so glad we’re going to this convention
To find out about Hello Kitty’s taste in bows,
We’ll find out answers to the mysteries of life,
Like why she has no mouth, just eyes and nose.
There will be speeches that will make us really wonder,
Does she have a complex about being fat?
Hello Kitty’s still young at heart is our motto,
And she’s definitely not a kitten, but a cat.”September 23, 2014 10:29 am at 10:29 am #1038828
Nicely done, CIJ! (Though I would’ve appreciated additional original lyrics, I like how you interwove the original and source material.)
By the way, welcome to the Coffee Room! Your interest seems to lie primarily with music – how do I know that? Read on!

Yes, but why do you ask?September 28, 2014 10:36 pm at 10:36 pm #1038833
@SIDI – Yep! And I just remembered by chance the name of his baby sister, Baby Kate.
Do you reckon Binky will adopt Kate as a pet, the way Arthur has a puppy (baby dog) for a pet?October 30, 2014 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #1038835
So, who’s at the convention?
