    Hi Yeshiva World long time no speak. Can I please have a word for “people that put other people down to bring themselves up.” Even though me and you know that putting other ppl down does not bring ones self up. looking forward to hearing.

    I don’t believe there is one English word that quite fits this bill. Ajewfrommonsey suggested supercilious, which means one who thinks that he is better than others (without the implication of putting others down in order to lift oneself up). You could perhaps go with “imperious”, which implies one who feels that he has the right to order others around.

    Schadenfreude. Or close enough. It means getting enjoyment out of the suffering/discomfort/misfortune of others. It’s originally German, but it seems to be quite accepted in English
