Before i say my opinion let me pose the question; what do you think is the right age to allow children to drive alone long distances/on highways?
It’s hard to say. Depends on how responsible the child is. They are usually very different with a parent in the car.
I personally started driving on the highway at 16. Without a license.
I was driving on the highway while I was still taking driving lessons. Apparently I had a chush for driving because after only a couple of lessons all the instructor had to teach me was highway driving. I was driving alone long distances from before I even had my license (I had a permit don’t worry!)

The problem isn’t the age, it’s the training. I don’t know if driver’s ed or private driving schools give instruction and practice in highway driving. Personally, I started driving legally at age 14.
What is behind the question. Are you concerned about improper planning (tired etc.), lack of supervision for a significant amount of time while they are behind the wheel? In many ways, it is easier to drive on the highway than it is on local city streets, especially in many of the places where frum people live.

popa- i should have known that something like that was coming from you! I am not even shocked but thank you for the compliment! I drive highways all the tiem and think i do a pretty good job at it! Maybe that is why ppl tell me that I drive like a guy!

I don’t know why some women get defensive when people say they are bad drivers.
I am bad at lots of things, and some of them are because I am a guy.
I am terrible at all sports.
I cannot match my clothes even if they are all black or white.
I don’t know how to use computers.
So most women are bad drivers. So what? Where is the big insult here?
popa – oh please. Plenty women are better drivers and the only reasons the other are not is because the men are crazy drivers and are scary.
Women are great drivers.
The problem is there are men driving like maniacs on the roads.
Its a matter of driving record and confidence. Age only comes into play if someone is very young or very old because of their reflects and reactions.
One needs to be alert and responsible at any age. If they meet the requirements and are comfortable doing long distances, have the common sense to stop when tired and know what to do in case of emergency or accident without panicking, then that is what should be taken into consideration. Only the parent and the child what “age” that is.
Their reflects? Do you mean reflexes? Reflectors? Perhaps defects?
HIE- the car is a death trap. if you can handle it without your parents in the car and you have good reflexes and are not going to space out and talk on phone etc then go for it. if not, then dont rush!
