whats the point! y do teachers have to give homework (i know its been done for yrs) when kids have been in school for hours and hours and need to relax but they come home to hours of homework instead i hated it all my school yrs and i hate it as a mother! just know i have to do a couple of grades at a time each night! whats the point
Well, for one thing, I think a subject like math needs a kid to do some extra exercises just to do some repetition and give the rules that they learned in school some practice. There’s no time for that during class. Other things like essays, reports and projects, while time consuming, force a kid to think on his/her own without just hearing the teacher’s voice and to create something novel, combining things learned perhaps in different subjects. Things can get boring day after day listening to the teacher’s talk.
I do agree, though, that too much homework is a problem, but it’s hard for teachers to coordinate with the whole staff who gives homework that day and who doesn’t. A little bit would not be bad, shouldn’t take more than 1/2 hour on any given day with all subjects, unless it’s a special project and then the teacher doesn’t give any other homework while they’re working on it.
kids have to learn to think for themselves. that’s precisely how they learn innitiative and responsibility… It’s for thier benifit afterall..
students should also be taught in a way thaty is not a burden but in a fun relaxing but stimulating environment so that they can achieve far beyond the classroom walls.
that’s why homework has been found to be very affective in this sense.
children that fail the responsibilty of managing thier homework find it much harder after graduating to pace themselves effectively. study has shown that homework is the best way to go and there is no reason to eliminate it from the system.
not to mention all this tech that has come out in this generation they have become lazier than ever before… homework keeps the mind stimulated and alert. nothing wrong with it. perfectly healthy!! In school, outta school, it’s life!!! learn now while your young!

To keep the kids busy at home with usefull things, and not narishkieten.
Homework has its place- it can reinforce what was learned and teach responsibility (getting it done, remembering to bring it, learning to pace oneself etc). However, a lot of homework given is really just busy work to make up for what’s not happening in class or to make it look like the teacher is doing her job. This kind of homework is useless and detrimental to all involved. If you think this is the case, talk to the school. However, a sheet of exercises to practice what was learned today is not a big deal, and a longer term project (book report, research paper etc) is important for fostering independent work, creativity, and research/planning/writing skills (as well as the responsibility that comes with keeping to a deadline). This kind of homework is important and you should not fight it.
Firstly, let me say that you are right, and parents have been right about this for a long time. Having said that, there is not much we can do about it because many kids need it and many parents want it so the system is NOT going to change.
Please understand that YOU should NOT be doing the homework and you SHOULD encourage the kids to do it on their own. Try to separate them as much as possible and allow them to work separately in a quiet environment. Tell them to do whatever they can on their own, skip what they need your help with, and you will help each of them once they have finished what they can on their own. Set a clock for each. In other words, take a post it, and mark the time each one starts. Do this for at least two weeks, so you have an idea of how long it takes each kid (each grade) to do their homework. Then you can discuss with the other parents in each class how long it takes their kids to do homework. If it takes the same amount of time and you all agree that it is too much then as a group of parents you can approach the teacher and say that she/he is assigning too much homework and that she/he has to cover more work in class and not leave it to the parents to teach it to the kids at home. If it is just your child that is taking too long, then you might have to consider getting some help at home to get your child more focused and up to speed.
By timing the kids, and allowing them to do their work on their own and only watching over them when they come to you after trying on their own, you have a better picture of what they learned in school, what they are capable of figuring out on their own, and what you need to reinforce or teach on your own. You have a better understanding of whether the teacher is giving too much or whether your child needs extra help. In this way, you have a better understanding of where the problem lies.
Many, many moons ago, when my kids were young, I complained to the teacher that she was giving ME too much homework. She laughed at me and said why? I said because I had to sit with my daughter and answer all her questions and help her. The teacher told me “I didn’t ask you to, your daughter was supposed to learn to come to school and ask ME what she didn’t understand!”.

The thought behind homework is basically the idea to practice independently what was learned in class. Studies show this moves short term learning into the realm of long term knowledge.
Basically, the idea would be as if someone had one, big piano lesson on Sunday. Do they know the piece? They dont own the ability to play it unless they practice.
Well, homework is a way for the students to “own” the knowledge the teacher taught in class.

It is not easy, but it has to be done.
I certainly remember the LONG hours devoted to homework and even the last minute, “Oh, I have a report due tomorrow.” And I did the typing at 5am..on numerous occasions. Not only that, but it is not good for the children as they start to get dark circles under their eyes by Wednesday and you can tell what goes in one ear comes out the other.
