It got to 109 degrees where I live today. I’ve never been in heat like that, not even the one time I was in Las Vegas. Tonight we had a thunderstorm, complete with heavy rain for 5 minutes.

My daughter in Beersheva told me that it was 111 degrees down there today.

Another daughter in Yerushalayim tells me it’s drizzling there right now.

    Oy!

Wow. That’s hot. 111 degrees to you Israelis is 231.8 degrees to the us in the non-metric world. 🙂

    Keep cool!

Despite the heat, we didn’t need air conditioning before 5 p.m. Our house was cool thanks to the way our houses were built.

Goldilocks: We live in the Shomron.

Wolf: Thanks – I already pre-translated the numbers into Fahrenheit for the majority audience. I should have added the “F” after the numbers. 😉

I was once in 120+ degrees. But it was a dry heat 🙂

How were your houses built that they don’t need AC?

With Shelach Lecho just 2 weeks away, it is so absolutely critical not to say anything about Eretz Yisroel which could even possibly remotely be construed as Loshon hoRo.

Eretz Yisroel is such a wonderful place!!!

It really is. What a shame the zionist reshoim are running it.

    147:

    1) But if were 3 weeks away it would be okay?

    2) Complaining about heat is in no way lashon hara.

    3) You do understand that the order of when we read the parshiot is pretty arbitrary, right?

Since the Zionist have opened up Eretz Yisroel to all Jews, we all have to be Makir Tov to them.

Such mode of conduct is antitheses of what Reshoim would do.

I remind you DasYochid of WW2 when many members of my family tragically had nowhere to escape to.

Since Iyyor 5th 5708, all this changed literally overnight, & since then:- B’H no Jew has to be relegated to being a wondering Jew, as all we Jews are welcome with open arms to Eretz Yisroel.

Even if you want to “entitle everyone to their own opinion” (which is often questionable), why does a chareidi website not espouse the daas Torah outlook? For the record, the opinion of the Gedolei Torah is that we don’t have to “be thankful” to reshoim even for something “good” that they might have done. Generally, the evil and destruction they have perpetrated outweighs anything good they might have done. The Brisker Rav told people that saying the truth (about what the reshoim are doing in E.Y.) is permitted and doesn’t constitute “dibas ha’aretz.” And 147, what exactly changed “overnight” on the 5th of Iyar? Zero changed on that day, except (according to the words of the Chazon Ish reported by some) “the day Hordus (Herod) seized control of the country.” You are commemorating the outbreak of a war that has not ended to this day. It would make more sense to celebrate the day they signed an armistice with the Arab states in 1949. But 5th of Iyar? And before you sing the praises of the reshoim whom you think provided a “safe haven” for the wretched Jews of Europe, don’t forget that “one cow in Palestine (E.Y) was (considered) worth more than all the Jews of Europe.” Jews got into E.Y. despite the zionists, not because of them.

Regarding the weather, the Chafetz Chaim brings a statement from the Ben Ish Chai who says one shouldn’t criticize the weather in E.Y. and that this could be a form of “dibas ha’aretz.”

YW Moderator-42: It’s not that we don’t need air condition. Our houses are built with poured concrete. It retains cold and heat. The fact that previous days were relatively cool and comfortable, the house retains that temperature a long time, so we didn’t need air conditioning until late in the afternoon.

The converse side of it is that in the winter, when it’s 40 degrees F outside, we often need heat, or we can go outside to warm up. It feel about as cold indoors as when the States have 20 degrees outside.

In response to “Since the Zionist have opened up Eretz Yisroel to all Jews” but they closed it to hareidim. Under the British and the Turks Jews were exempt from conscription (except for one year, when the Turkish Empire was collapsing and they tried to draft Jews and Arabs, neither of whom were at all cooperative). While the zionists have exempted most hareidim under the pretense they were learning full time (a legal fiction in many cases, but one that avoided a confrontation), that is now ending.

akuperma – It is the Charaidim’s fault that they are being drafted. The state has no intention of drafting Arabs, and for good reason! If the Charaidim would treat the state like the Arabs treat the State, then they would not be drafted either. The problem is that the Charaidim are “Posach al Stei Seifim” regarding Zionism, and they have none other than themselves to blame.

    gaw,

are you saying the chareidim should go blow up shopping centers?

you really think the israeli arabs don’t take money from the medinah? if the palestinains do it why can’t they?

Thank you, american_yerushalmi. I’ve grown tired of counter posting sechel every time these comments (from the same posters) pop up.

coffee addict – They should be open to their opposition to the state and its institutions (similar to Brisk or Eidah Charaidis), and not join governments that do not implement a full-blown Halachic State (Lishitasom), just like the Arabs who do not join the government because it is a “Jewish” state (and they believe it should be a non-denominational state).

Taking their money is one (large) step in the ability of the government to coerce the Charaidim to be in the army. If all Charaidim would be like the Briskers, we would not be having this discussion.

american_yerushalmi – Whose Da’as Torah? Rav Kook and Rav Solivetchik? Or Rav Solivetchik and Rav Karlitz? Or maybe Rav Yosef?

There are so many opinions of Gedolei Yisroel, one can safely hold almost anything regarding the Medinah and still be following “Daas Torah”.

That all being said, I would argue that YWN is not “Charaidi”, but “Yeshivish”, and yes they are very different. Part of that difference is the attitude towards “Daas Torah”.

Mods, please close the thread. When I opened this thread, it was about the hot weather. All of a sudden it was hijacked into a vicious debate over Zionism.

Perhaps, one day, some of the posters here will learn that just because they can say something, doesn’t mean they should.

Again, mods, please close this down.
