We open and close things with either hand.

We play drums, piano/keyboard and many musical instruments with both hands, which involves complete control of both hands.

We type and play games with both hands.

We sew or knit with both hands.

We push and pull things and wipe up spills with either hand.

Some people eat with both hands. Others use a knife and fork.

Jewish people even talk with both hands.

Some people hold the wheel of a car with both hands while many only use one (but this seems to be more youth related than ambidextrous related).

Most things are made or built using both hands, (although for the unidextrous, if there is such a term, I strongly recommend cutting and using a hammer only with your dominant hand).

So why is writing so different? What makes most people utterly unable to even hold a pen in their ‘wrong’ hand, let alone write normally with it?

How comes we aren’t all naturally completely ambidextrous?

It’s fine motor skills. We are only trained to perfect it with one hand, usually the hand that reflects the dominant side of the brain. But you can train yourself to use either.

Correct. But, Oh Informative Contributor to the CR, pray tell us why this is.

Actually, people who are ambidexterous have only the motor skills that we all have in our weaker hand.

They just don’t have a strong right or left hand.

That is why they usually have awful handwriting, and are uncoordinated. We could also learn to write badly with our weak hand, but there is no reason to.

It’s because when one of the Mods made a “gitcher free subtitle hea”, I jumped on the bandwagon. The deal was though, that the Mod got to pick it. I’m not a very exciting poster, so that’s what s/he chose for me.

Untrue. You cant write properly with your weaker hand whereas ambis can write with both.

I dont have awful handwriting. You can read this, cant you? And I’m also exceptionally coordinated. Or something like that. I know exactly in which pile everything that I’m looking for is.
