Hi, I was just wondering if anyone here has ever struggled with their faith or emunah?

I was raised in a secular Jewish household but recently have been feeling a “tug” towards my ancient Jewish heritage. I want to become more observant, but I feel I lack the emunah to do so.

I believe in G-d, I always have, but I don’t think that is enough to sustain an observant Jewish lifestyle. I would like to actually feel a connection to Hashem. What I have seen others experience goes beyond faith but actual certainty in Him and His holy Torah. This is the emunah I am yearning for, but I don’t know how to build it or find it.

I have tried praying but nothing really has changed, maybe I just need to do it more.

I thought I would post here in hopes that someone could maybe advise me. I keep trying to learn more about the traditions, about Torah, but I am plagued by my own scepticism after years of being non-religious. Does anyone have some advice to overcome this?

Perhaps start by learning the book of duties of the heart which can be found in any judaica store

Hi Rivke. Even us “born religous” struggle with emunah. Emunah is something every human needs to work on every day. It’s a common misconception others have that we are already perfect in spirituality.

You shouldn’t feel guilty for anything, G-d only judges you based on your abilities, circumstance, and knowledge. No time to start learning like the present!

    Shalom Rivke,

In order to have the kind of emunah in HaShem that you are talking about, you need to have a relationship with Him. And, just like any other kind of real relationship, it takes time to build. So, don’t think about the future right now; just take it one day at a time. And, keep learning, asking questions, and praying. HaShem wants you to come closer to Him, and He won’t make that process impossible for you to do.

    Hatzlacha!

Emunah is something which comes with time. Just remember everytime you start your car you have emunah it will work.

If you are looking for a connection, you can look out for two or three things in your day that happened specifically to you. They can be anything from making a light or finding something you needed to meeting an old friend, winning a prize, getting a raise etc. In my experience, the more you do it, the more you will notice these things.

Also, just try talking to G-d in your own words. You can talk about your day, or that you get to work on time or something which is more concerning to you. As you do it, you will start to become more comfortable and find yourself looking forward to it.

Hi everyone, so sorry for the delay, I forgot to check my thread here! I just wanted to thank you all so much for taking the time to answer my question. I know it was a very big, complicated question and I wasn’t sure if anyone would know how to answer, so I really appreciate those of you who did.

    Many thanks again!
