Anyone have any ideas on how to beat speeding tickets?

I’m sure everyone has a story or two to add, and hopefully one of those stories will have an idea to help someone get out of a moving violation.

How about not being the fastest car on the road?

Try it……almost always guaranteed to work!

    🙂 🙂

To beat a speeding ticket in NY City you will need to do one of two things:

    1) Hire a lawyer with an “in” at the court. Expect to pay through the nose.

    2) Appeal the ruling to a higher court. Good luck with this as an appeals court will only review the proceedings and the decision of the traffic court. It will be difficult to stick anything into the court case that can be used in an appeal (see next paragraph).

NYC courts are “kangaroo courts”. That means they exist only so that you can exercise your right to fight the ticket – and lose. There is no prosecutor, so the judge or the cop has to act as the prosecution. Since it is unconstitutional for a judge to do this (judges must be unbiased), they have adapted the style of the court session to be a “complaint” so that the cop is bringing a “suit” against you and you are not being prosecuted. Forget about trying to win, or asking them to show records of the radar calibration – you are guilty a priori.

Outside NYC, it is common for the courts to entice you to plea bargain – more money for them, less points for you. Most of the time it is more advantageous to accept this than to annoy the court by fighting the ticket (unless your case is iron-clad).

moish: those nuts that drive pre 17 are usually reckless as well. Unless they’re lucky enough to live in NJ where its actually legal.

lgbl: the last time you drove me (I believe it was w/o the license) you drove pretty slow! ha ha. I’m sure you’re better at that now anyways…

a big ny rabbi said this story about himself during a shabbos shuva (or hagadol) drasha

he made an illegal turn with his wife in the car. immediately the sirens went off and he was pulled over, as he pulled over his wife told him ‘you deserve this’. as the cop came to the window, he told the cop ‘my wife told me i deserve this ticket’ the cop looks at him like ‘you have enough tzaros already’ and tells him i won’t give you a ticket, just don’t do it again.

I don’t know about ny but in other states, you go to traffic court and are usually fined and sent to driving school; if you keep your nose clean for a certain amount of time it doesn’t go on your record.

a long time ago, I was driving with Ma-72 O’BM, sis-72 and niece-72. the left turn lane light turned green and I went… straight. in the left turn lane was an unmarked car (back in the day when unmarked cars were really unmarked) pulling into the township police department :o( he decided to not pull into the police station and decides to pull me over… go figure. I pull onto a side street and he pulled over across the street from me. I met him halfway across the street (back in the day when you could still get out of your car when pulled over). he asked what was going on. I asked him to look in the car and tell me what he sees. He responded: your wife, child and mother-in-law. I asked if he had any more questions (without confirming or denying what he thought he saw). He told me no and that I should try to pay more attention. no ticket.

Jo Jo – Why do you think there are posted road speed signs on city streets and highways, because they are the safest driving speeds for those particular roads. Driving is a privilege not a right. Just drive no more than the speed limit posted on the road that way you can avoid a ticket.

yankdownunder: Yeh. I was going to say the easiest way to fight a speeding ticket is to not speed.

…that and opening windows. You must be a real gadol when you get to drive with the window open. 😉

dunno, my mother got one, most annoying thing because technically no wrong is being done, its everyone in front of you who did. Costs a lot too.

ames, lol, kill 3 birds with one stone. At one point between all the drivers in my family my parents had like 5 or 6 tickets to pay in a year (like $600) I offer you two options. 1. more likely for a reduction than a dismissal, write a letter of why you dont deserve the ticket, usually gets you something but it may not be too much. 2. they advertise in some of the free handouts these “ticket-fighters” where you pay a minimal amount for them to fight the ticket. Usually ends up being much less, especially with multiple tickets.

    ames, that was BRILLIANT!

go to court to fight your ticket(s)… while you’re there they’ll notice on your file that you didn’t serve jury duty, so they’ll call you in… but they’ll let you off within 30 seconds because you’re noge’a b’dovor!

(if only it really worked that way, right?)

…talk about killing two stones with one bird 😉
